Cold Starts

When you start your Rav's from cold,is it generally good practise to idle it for a few mins to let the oil ' get around ' ?

I've got magnatec in mine ( according to last main dealer service sheet )...so i assume the engine components should already have sufficient oil coatings ?

I've always started to drive off quite slowly & gently in mornings...is this correct, just thought its better for the warm up process??

Or can i give the beans from the go.....watching a few neighbours ( in various vehicles ) go off in the mornings, they have never seemed to hold back like i do,they start their cars & vans and just.....go.

I'm just trying to make mine last longer ??

I start mine a few minutes before leaving then drive of slowly until the car has warmed up... Being diesel this takes about 10 minutes to reach optimum temperature.

Also having over 155k on the clock I take care of the old girl... Still drives nice and sweet...

Your neighbours will be getting their cars fixed long before you will Rambler....

Totally agree with Chatman here. Always allow your engine to idle on a cold start for at least 10-15 seconds and longer in winter months! This will add another 100k of engine life to your car. I also alow the engine to idle for at least 30 sec after a long motorway run or hill work to cool the Turbo down.

Yep. 20-30 second idle before setting off. i then dont go above 1900rpm until the oil is warm. after a run i always let it idle for a minute to stabalise and let turbo spin down etc.

OK....looks like i do it right then  ...only at the moment i think my EGR valve is playing up..it does not like me flooring it when partially warmed up....if i drive gentle for first 3-5 miles i'm fine.

IF i floor it after a mile or so ,it goes into idle mode & light comes on....being looked at next week.

Crikey Chatman.....155k....doing well :yahoo:
