4.2 Rear Shelf Tip

Had our Rav for over a year now and the time has come to do something about that rear shelf. Decided I have had enough bumps on the head from the shelf falling down when putting stuff in the back.

Dont know how I missed it before but when you look under the shelf there are a couple of plastic attachments as if Mr T was going to put some kind of strap arrangement for holding something but forgot.

So I got a bungee strap and cut it so that it reached between the two plastic clips and was under a slight tension. A simple screw with a washer through the strap and into the hole in the rhs clip and the other end hooks neatly into the other plastic clip.

To hold up the shelf, reach under for the strap and hook it onto the rear lip of the car. Sorted

Its a bit rough n ready and Im sure you engineers out there can make something neater but the idea is there!

I would put some kind of little stopper on the metal hook of the Bungee to avoid it scratching the top. Water has a tendency to settle there and want to eliminate a potential rust point.

That hook underneath the parcel shelf on the left I aways regarded as the "Curry Hook" - very handy when coming back from the takeaway, whether , or

For all that, I think its better than the 4.3 shelf, my wife used to make sadwiches on the 4.2 shelf when we had a picnic, My new PUP who is not the best behaved has found if he leaps onto the rear shelf, he can wiggle his way into the boot (between the metal part and the rear seat) we came back from 1/2 an hours shopping to find him in the boot happily munching through a pack of minced steak (bless him) Stew

I still didn't manage to figure out how to fit the thing in the first place, it just kept falling into the boot so it's on the growing pile of stuff that the car will be living without for the foreseeable future...

One of the first things I done to my 4.2 when I had it was a simple fix for the head bumping parcel shelf.

If you look at the trims that go up either side of the rear door opening, you will see a little dirty mark where

the parcel shelf hits the trim when in the up position.Take a couple of small pieces of sticky velcro (the jaggy

side) and stick them where the mark is.Now whenever yo raise the parcel shelf it grips on the velcro and

stays there, no falling on ones head. Simple
