Eml Light And Losing Power

My brothers RAV4.2, has had on a couple of occasions the EML come on when the car is under load I,e uphill. the car goes in to limp mode and then re-starting it everything is OK, but this is obviously worrying especially as he is passing the car on to his daughter, (and buying another Rav)..Now,as the car is a 2002 it has no OBD, and he has had the SCvalves done not so long ago, I've done a search and the only other thing that comes to mind is a sticking turbo, can anyone throw some light on this please, I am sure we have had these symptons many times but cannot find a conclusive answer..Many thanks :thumbsup: Stew

Hi Stew

Tell him to take off the VSV indicated in this diagram. Be careful not to break the spouts off when removing the pipes then squirt some WD40 into each hole and give it a good shake lengthways so he can feel the shuttle moving. They sometimes stick.

Hi Anch's......would this valve still stick once engine has fully warmed up ?

Can see this vsv just above the Egr...sooo tempting to undo those bolts & pipes & give it a go....but tbh all those plugs & wires scare me..if i break one little bit :crybaby:

Cant believe such a small bit of equipment can cause such trouble.........looks so dainty.

Thanks for advice Anchs will get him to do that, I Think he is currently driving back from Cornwall, so lets hope its not in limp mode, or he could be quite a while :unsure: Stew

That little valve completely controls the turbo output. If you mark the pipes and take your time you should be OK. It might just cure your problem.

Stew,

Took the Rav to my man today, he has checked and lubed the valve that Anchorman suggested but was not convinced there was anything wrong with it, also and more relevantly I think, he also checked the actuator arm on the Turbo that operates the variable vains, it was in his opinion much stiffer than usual, by physically ‘working’ this and using WD40 he says it is now as free operating as it should be, he also checked this on other sites where Garrett Turbos are discussed and it appears to be quite common. The fault code recorded was P1250, Turbo Malfunction. He has also removed the Tunit Unit for me. He could fit a recon Turbo Unit from a Garrett specialist at £900 inc labour but is not convinced this is the right thing to do at this point.

The car appears to be working fine, and even without the Tunit it appears to be pulling much better from low revs than I can ever remember it doing, The reason I fitted the Tunit was that it was as flat as a flute below 1400ish revs, it now pulls strongly from 1100/1200rpm in any gear, I spent 30mins up and around the hills in saddleworth without incident. Obviously it’s too early to conclude that I’ve had a result...

Not sure what you mean Anchs, :unsure: but my brother took your reply plus a couple of others from a search on similar symptons and his mechanic was able to do whatever he did, as yet we do not know if it is completely cured, but if it is then a result, just thought this might help someone with similar problems, also I have seen prices for Turbos on here at £1500+ so if you can get a re-con fitted for £900 then i thought it was worth posting :unsure: Stew

I was pulling your (his) leg Stew. He seemed to put more emphasis on WD40 ing the turbo link but in reallity there is very little to sieze - it never stops moving unless the vehicle is stood for long periods :thumbsup:

Sometimes you and others post replies that genuinely help people, (i have even done this myself) and then you never get a reply to let you know if your advice worked, or whether it was helpful,which can be a bit frustrating, well hopefully in this case it was.. and thanks :thumbsup: Stew

Mind that RAV meet in Warrington??? Apart from my older (elder) daughter working in Manchester, my brother-in-law is moving back to Warrington to manage a Marstons pub at the end of this month! An excuse to visit if I can get number 1 back together !! If not, then number 2 is working well anyway and now getting 280mpg to a tank.

On the subject of turbos, it seems bizarre - for those sort of costs I can pick up racing quality turbos in the tuning world!!

I get this happening every few weeks in winter, normally going uphill in 0degree temperatures. Happened today going through a tunnel on the flat though - I was accelerating, engine had just warmed up but the turbo intake was blocked by snow. Restarted the car and it happened again immediately, twice. Got out and cleared the turbo intake and all was good again (EM light stays on though). So my heavily scientific research indicates something to do with breathing...
