I know this is off-topic really, but the Auris seems to be a bit of a forgotten car, but I have always thought they looked just right and seemed a great all-round car. Tom, ignoring all things engine, how do you find the Auris generally? And in comparison to Golfs, etc?

As you know, David, I got nephew a 2009 Auris with 8500 miles on it...1.6 petrol....he loves it and I should have kept it....!!!!

And it would have been a hell of a lot better then the Clio that was bought instead and has been back to Arnies 2 or 3 times with just 500 miles more on the clock then when bought! Doh!!

This is why I'm torn, if it wasn't a good car I'd have sold it by now but both me and my wife really like it. I think it looks nice, understated but sporty, great spec for the money, well built (engine aside) and drives and handles well. Having never wanted to pay the Badge tax for a golf I can't compare it accurately. We did look at focus's but got put off by the seemingly flimsy build quality (centre console wobbling, trim around interior features easily scratched and general niggling noises). We then test drove a 2 litre Auris diesel and it was in my opinion better maybe not the steering but the all round user friendliness, but I must admit it did look a tad drab. So looking into Auris's i found our SR180 and it looked a lot better plus fancied the idea of combining performance with a bit of economy. Of course I knew it would use a bit more diesel but not that much.

I just keep reading about how people on here that have had the same issues and seem to have solved them in many different ways. She's easy on the eye lets hope I can make her a little bit easier on the wallet!

Cheers for the info, Tom. Here's hoping you get sorted :) it does seem that the fix is almost always successful for both reliability and economy improvements, so fingers crossed!

Hi

Greetings from Finland!

A month ago, I bought Auris D4D 2.0, yearmodel 2008. The car was on sale on the local Hyndai dealer. The dealer told me, the engine was replaced just before it arrive to his shop. I check the servicebook and there was marking on it. The local Toyota dealer has replaced the engine.

Car has gone 96500 km, before engine replacement. I have drove 1500 with my new engine.

I have two things, I am wondering...

1. First my new engine was very quiet after warm up, you cant hear is it a petrol or diesel engine. Now it quite noise (diesel knock). Any ideas?

I think the sound comes from injectors (rpm 1500-2500).

2.I have also problem with DPF. The car has three times fault code P2002. First, just before engine replacement and two times since I have bought it.

Could these DPF problems be caused by old, faulty engine?

Should the DPF filter also replaced during engine replacement?

CharlieFarlie wrote:

"The following will or may be replaced during the procedure.

EGR valve

Injectors including the 5th injector

Catalytic convertor

DPF filter

The engine oil of course and the coolant

Air conditioning will be re gassed"

Hyndai dealer was the owner during the engine replacement and he dont insist to replace also DPF filter. I am going to contact Toyota Finland and complain.

Welcome to the club.

The injectors get noisy when the weather is cold but can be improved by using high grade diesel if available in your country.

Secondly, the dealer who fitted the engine could have claimed the DPF as part of engine replacement. Toyota will not willingly replace it retrospectively but as you have some evidence that it was faulty before and after replacement of the engine, they may see your claim sympathetically - it is certainly worth a try.

Not being familiar with the Auris... Does your car as indicated have a 2.0 engine ? Or is it a 2.2 ?

If it is a 2.0 (As above i don't know if a 2.0 is fitted to the Auris) then your engine does not fit into this topic ??

My Auris has 2.0 D4D engine (1AD-FTV).

Service bulletin covers also 1AD-FTV engine.

Avensis with 1AD or 2AD (Prod. Date: Apr 2005 to Feb 2009)

RAV4 with 2AD (Prod. Date: Jul 2005 to Dec 2008)

Auris with 1AD or 2AD (Prod. Date: Sep 2006 to Sep 2009)

Verso with 2AD (Prod. Date: Apr 2005 to Nov 2008)

What is the number of the Technical Service Bulletin, mention at the beginning of the topic?

Right I see.. I had absolutely no idea this issue was on any other engine than the 2AD 2.2 engine.....

News to me tae, Charlie.....so it begs the question (preferably without a "survey" as such....) .....what percentage of each model sold has had the engine failure, now we know that the unofficial published figure was "thousands of engines replaced"......?

It may make the Rav problem less than WE all thought, since not peculiar to only the one model.....? (Note the stress on WE......)

Also with the Rav being the most expensive / specialist of the four, so sales lower than the other 3, the Rav may not be as worrysome as WE may have thought.....?

Just a thought.....that is all......

No idea Kev.. Im sure you will understand my reluctance to get into another conversation about facts or figures on this subject.. All it has done in the past is create bad feelings and get me into trouble.. Nuff said..

I have heard much about the 2AD 2.2 engine suffering the engine issues I wrote about on page one of this topic. BUT I have never before heard of a 2.0 litre diesel engine being affected..

In all honesty I did not even know if there was/is a 2.0 diesel in the Toyota range as with there being a 2.2 I thought that was it...

Looking around the other groups of this forum I have seen many other 2.2 engines in various cars mentioned as having suffered the issues but have seen no mention whatsoever of a 2.0 one being affected.

Confused..............................................

This thread has been live for just over one year... At no point has anyone pointed out or said that this is not just a 2.2 2AD engine issue.

I'm both surprised and amazed at this to say the least..

That just makes me guilty of not reading what I copied and pasted David !!

Honestly I genuinely thought the engine issues applied to just the 2.2 engines..

This is the first I have heard of it affecting a 2.0 engine.

Hi Charlie,

I just wanted to give you and others an update from our conversation in this thread before Xmas. After several weeks of complaing to the Toyota dealer and Toyota GB I got confrimation just before Xmas that they will do the full engine replacement under the extended Warrenty. Yesterday I picked up the car having had the work completed and no bill!!!!

Thank you for all the advice and informaiton, I would never have been able to prove the issue I had shoul dhave been fixed under the extended warrenty and would not have had the confidence to push Toyota as I did.

Here's to more happy Toyota motoring.

Thats great news, i have just had Toyota agree to replace the CAT under warrenty after a long battle all week! They will then do the 1000 mile test for the engine replacement, so hopfully i will get it done too!

How is the new engine compared to the old?

It feels more responsive, quieter and strangely my heater is working better, but it has only been 1 day, so looking forward to seeing the improvements in the upcoming weeks.

Update from my Nov'12 post.

Warranty engine now fitted (Rav 4 2007 XT5 54000 miles). Seems good; unable to detect difference to previous engine. Fuel economy the same (42mpg if driving fast, high 60'smpg if drive <65mph). Done well and quickly at dealership. Overall happy with the result.

Gear changes felt rough compared to before (I paid for a clutch to be fitted - no labour). Drive tested by dealer who said gear changes ok. Seem ok now, though still rough when cold.

re. missed services discussion from previous posts.....

I bought this car Nov 2011 from a dealer with 1 year toyota warranty. When engine fault was found we'd actually voided our 1 year warranty by not having a service every 10 000 miles; we were at about 17 000 miles since last service (by dealer when car purchased), but engine replaced without question under engine extended warranty regardless without any discussion.

Best wishes and thanks for all of your advice.

Nick

Had my engine replaced by Toyota during December, only done approx 400 miles since and all seems to be OK apart from a 'Whistling' noise when acelerating. I think somebody else also reported the 'Whistling' noise in another thread, not sure if it is anything to be concerned about but I will inform Toyota when the car goes back for the 600 mile check.

Happy New Year everyone.

Hi, I had just decided on getting a ~2008 2.2 Rav4, and then I found this thread! Does this engine problem affect all of them eventually? What percent of engines have already been replaced? Should I only buy one that's already been done?

I'm a bit concerned that I'm likely to keep the car past the 7 year warranty. I had decided on Toyota because of the reputation for reliability, and a diesel because the engines are supposed to last forever, so all this stuff has thrown me a bit.

Thanks a lot for any info you can give me!
