New Rear Discs/pads,but Something Still Not Right

i had new rear discs and pads fitted on tuesday at my local toyota dealer for £215,they were well worn, but i was going to wait a few weeks to have them fitted, until i was driving to work a week ago and could here a squealing noise coming from the car when on the motorway, so when i arrived at work (10 miles) i could smell burning which was coming from the rear nearside wheel which was hot to touch, so i thought i would get it booked straight in.

anyway since they have been fitted ive noticed the rear nearside wheel is still warm to touch when ive driven to work ( all other wheels cool) no burning smell or noise though.

do you think it could be a sticking caliper, or maybe wheel bearing problems. my cars 4 years old in march 37k miles.

cars booked back in tomorrow morning.

what do you think of the chances of a goodwill gesture from toyota if its the wheel bearing considering age and milage with full toyota history ?

A sticking caliper should have been picked up by the garage when they did the disc/pad change......If they missed this I would think that you should stand a good chance of a "goodwill" jesture to free off the sticky caliper

If it is a wheel bearing, then you may be expected to pay for the repair, although you might think that the garage would have noticed a worn bearing when they did the brake work and bought it to your attention

Agreed Red - they should have noticed either way. It definitely sounds more like a sticking caliper, especially so in winter when all the road crud starts causing these kinds of problems. At such a low mileage, Toyota should do the repair work for minimal cost.

took my car back in this morning and they fitted some small part where the hand brake joins the caliper ?to be honest i cant remember exactly what part they said it was called, but its so far stopped the wheel feeling warm after a drive, the tech and service manager said they were confident it would work, but if it didnt it would mean a new caliper at about £150

i think i can still here a very slight grinding, dronning noise ( hard to describe) at speeds between 50-60 mph now and again from the rear?

see what happens next week traveling to and from work

  • 2 weeks later...

got to work this morning and checked the wheel for heat and all wasnt well !

it was very warm again, so i phoned my local dealer and told them it was back and asked for a price for a new caliper (was told this was the only solution if it returned) i nearly fell off my chair when they gave me the price £258 for the caliper and mount, this was not including labour, but was told they would fit for free.agreed to have it fitted tomorrow, but said i was very unhappy at needing a new caliper at 37k and car not 4 years old until mid march.

i asked them to contact customer relations in the hope they may offer a goodwill gesture, and pay part of the cost, dealer didnt offer much hope but said they would ask. 30 minutes later got a call from dealer saying toyota would pay for everything !

ive got full history with dealer and ongoing service plan but didnt expect such a generous offer.

well done toyota ! if you dont ask you dont get.

Thats good news, as mine has a similar issue.

I will push them for a good will gesture when the MOT report tells me my car needs new rear pads with only 33k on the clock, and a grinding noise in slow traffic.

Thanks for the update.

new caliper fitted on friday, brakes spot on now (was told at dealer that one of the tech had been given a <the spuds of lurrrrvve>ing by the manager for not sorting the problem sooner )but the droneing drumming noise was still there, tech suggested it might be tyre noise, anyway to cut a long story short ive worked out myself what this noise is.

at the weekend when out driving in the strong wind i noticed at the speed it occurs 50-60 mph the tone of the noise changed with the wind, turns out its the new small ariel i put on over xmas that was from a new shape vw polo ! size shape thickness obviously not suited to the auris, so fitted a short ariel from a honda civic, noise gone !
