Emissions

Hi all

Had the 2nd MOT on my 2008 D4D TR today, mileage 25,764, it passed but I was told they had an issue with emissions.

On the feedback I was told they give it and I quote "a good blast" have to say I've noticed a drop in fuel consumption lately from about 38/39mpg running around to anywhere between 33 to 35mpg. Most of my driving is urban however with very little on the motorway.

Couple of questions

1. Is this possibly an EGR valve issue?

2. Or does the car need something added to the tank?(can't remember the name of the stuff I've seen members mention on here)

3 Will a good run on the motorway have a similar effect?

Thanks in advance for any replies

The colder weather has probably dropped the MPG as the car wont be getting warm and not coming off choke.

The nature of your usage could easily coke up the EGR valve. Giving it a blast may clear the excess soot out, running an additive won't hurt. Inspecting the EGR is sensible at this point, if its dirty clean it.

It may seem wrong to give it a blast but its essential if you only do urban driving, just make sure the engine is up to temperature and oil and water levels are correct.

cabcurtains thanks for the reply

So is 25,000 miles about right to clean the EGR?

Would the additive I read about on here worth adding to the tank?

Can't remember the name of it

Mr M (Mistermena) loves the BG244, you can get this on eBay or Amazon etc Some people like Forte, there are lots of brands, just make sure its suitable for common diesel rail engines.

EGR valves are more likely to be filling up if your journeys are short as the emissions system workers harder to clean the exhaust gas, in urban use every 12mths is probably more like it. It really depends on what state it is when you get it off.

BG244 that's the one had the car since October 7th 2010 done 9500miles

I suppose this is a lower than average mileage these days

How much of the BG244 do you add I usually put 26 litres in every 11 to 12 days?

Is it the "Italian tune-up" I read about on here?

1,000 miles a month is pretty average :)

If i remember a full can does 60 litres of fuel, so tip a tin in and then pull on the pump and full it to the brim with Diesel.

The italian tune is the "blast", get it warm drive in 2nd and 3rd to the redline and watch the soot fly out, once it stops go back to normal. Mrs CC is instructed to do this weekly.

I usually clean my EGR valve out every 10k and I have a spare one I put back on and clean the other ready for the change over next time. When was the fuel/air filter last changed? A good blast (Italian tune) from Swansea to Cardiff would be of use or you cool keep the car in a low gear and give it a blast (Traffic/legal conditions allowing) as mentioned by me mate Cab

Shell V-Power helps to maintain the EGR as well as....Wait for it!.... BG244! :yahoo: If you're anywhere near Cardiff (And are not sure how to clean the valve) give us a shout and I'll give you a hand doing it for a pint of lovely Welsh Brains SA :lol:

Hi mistermena thanks for the offer and the advice

I had a major service in August last year so the air filter would have been changed then

Will check out the BG244 that seems to be a standard for the Avensis diesel reading members posts

I'm off to Bridgend tomorrow sampling the delights again!!! of McArthur Glen with the present Mrs Nedofwales(funnily enough I only get as far as the Cadbury shop for some unknown reason) so a good run up there and back to sunny Abertawe should clear the tubes would you say?

Its about getting the revs up high, the distance wont matter if the driving is Miss Daisy style
