Rear Diff Clunk

Every so often I have a wee dabble in a field and often find when I return to Tarmac I get a clunk from somewhere around the rear diff.

It happened tonight. The sequence of events was:

Reverse into muddy field up hill, get stuck.

Engage lock and try again

Wheels spin out so give up and roll forward again disengaging lock

Hit Tarmac and turn right

As rear makes contact there is a clunk.

That's the gist of it. Don't really have any more detail. Any ideas? If we get some snow I imagine I'll hear it some more but thought i'd put out the feelers now.

I'd guess its just the slack in the transmission. Does your car have 5 doors? Perhaps one of them isn't shut??
