Remapping Ecu.

I was just wondering. We all know it's impossible to have the ECU remapped, hence we use tuning boxes. Myself included. But surely Toyota themselves have the technology/ability to look at or amend the ECU during routine maintenance if need be. I mean they built the cars that use them so why wouldn't they be able to.

And if they can, then why don't Toyota provide a legit remapping service for anyone who wishes. It would be a nice little side earner.

Regards.

I'm guessing that they dont do this in fear that there could be extra warranty claims when drivers decide to use the full power output that is there under there right foot! But they did do there own pedal box for the Hilux & LC I believe as there were a couple of the boxes for sale on eBay a while ago. There were very expensive when new at @£1,000 a pop...Sold for £275 used.

Wastedagen - may I ask why you're running such high tyre pressures ? Mine's is an SR180 model, but it runs 32 Psi rear, 38 Psi front. Do you not find the rear very stiff & your tyres wear quicker because of over-inflation ?

hi,

I just found that 40psi is the 'magic number' when it comes to even tread wear. Even when I came out from a service from Toyota they up't my pressure from stock to 38. I dont find any difference in road noise and/or comfort running at 40psi. I've also only got 16" wheels as opposed to you 17". If that makes any difference.....

Regards

The ECU and engine will be programmed and designed (hopefully) to be fully "punter proof" and offer a known life expectancy even if abused etc. The cars will stand foot to the floor driving (white van man :)) without rapid failure.

Of course Toyota can reprogramme an ECU but it would be for very minor issues that have come to light and fixes found.

Remapping can give huge performance benefits in some areas and huge trade offs in others.

Out of every 1000 (or 10000) cars sold how many owners would want to remap an ECU, how many would even have a clue what it was about.

It's just not economically viable for a manufacturer to bring out mods like this imo not least because in most cases the engine would not be expected to survive when in the hands of mechanically "unsympathetic" drivers. You see it all the time... cold icy start and it's foot to the floor as they pull away. An uprated engine wouldn't last.

It would be the easiest thing in the world to program an ECU such that a new car had a progressively increasing maximum RPM limit. SO that for the first 50 miles you could not exceed 2500 RPM say. To not allow driving for at least 30 seconds from a cold start. To let the engine idle for at least 30 seconds on removing the key etc etc. It's so easy to do but never would be on safety grounds. Mechanically aware folk do all these things, 95% of folk don't.

Yeah that's fair enough - didn't realise you'd have 16"'s, lol. Smaller radius wheels with higher profile tyres will definitely help there. :)

You're not wrong mate - there's an idiot across the road from me with an Evo 4. It doesn't matter whether it's +10 deg C or -10 deg C, he'll start it up & drive straight off & use all the revs on that poor cold engine. I'm amazed it's still running .....

Is the process reversible?
