Have a look at THIS Dale.

Not sure it will give you a lot of reassurance but the bit about geting them to admit the loss and providing a letter to the effect that they had seen the full history is advisable I think.

You may wish to point out that you will be suing them for any potential loss when you come to sell too..........

If you have receipts you could ask them to generate a new service book by chasing up stamps from previous garages. The receipts themselves make up a service record anyway.

I asked for reciepts etc for the Rav we have now,as it was advertised with full service history, and we was told by the salesman that people are a little reluctant to leave reciepts etc now with the history of the car,so we have none, just the stamps in the book.

So should there be service sheets available for us to have??

If it was Toyota maintained they can print off the invoices for all the services , ie what was done and what parts used (this can be very interesting) :-)

This is what I done with mine but mine was Lexus maintained. But they sholud have all the details . Even any warranty work that has been done.

Good point Jedi, I did just that when I bought a BMW way back. Book all stamped up but no record of any maintenace or repairs so contacted last known BMW dealer and they sent me chapter and verse on the car.

If you buy a second hand toyota and ask for a history of any warranty work etc, that was done before before you purchased the car then if they are like my dealer who printed the record off for me.

Yes it is Toyota maintained according to the stamps, all in the Birmingham area,so i will ask next time we are there, might even phone em up and ask

So any work that has been done to the car, including any service work should be on Toyotas records?

Yes Paul.. Any work and servicing that has been carried out at a Toyota Dealer will be on the computer system and They will give You a print out if You ask nicely...

Dales case is different as any work carried out at a non franchise Garage will be very hard to detect.....

Perhaps contacting the previous Owner might be a good place to start ??. Anything that has been done at the Franchised Dealers will be easy as said above but other work may be very hard to trace....

Charlie.

Given how easy it is to lose a Service Book (and there is a market for stamped-up 2nd hand ones as well) , I think it is worth making at the very least a photocopy of all the pages of yours just as a basic precaution against loss  (and any receipts you have as well).

Paulus, I don't understand the Salesmans explanation "..... told by the salesman that people are a little reluctant to leave receipts etc now with the history of the car,so we have none .....". I would find that a little hard to swallow myself as a reason. Sure, remove any information re method of payment, but the actual service receipt/invoice to me is more valuable then just a stamp in a book as it both backs up the stamp and says what was done.

Hence my question David

I did ask as i say about MOTs invoices etc when we was looking at the Rav,but he just kept saying it's all been stamped in the service book.

But now i know the service history should be on the puter then i will enquire a bit more.

As you say surely providing these service docs as been part of the service history, should help give the buyer more confidence in buying the vehicle??

What happens though if there are no records!!!That would just make me unsure about how true the history is of the car

Can those service books just be sent round to different Toyota service stations and be stamped up later on??

Or am i getting to paranoid now

When I bought my RAV it came with a fully stamped up service book from the Toyota dealer who sold it new. Also in the pack was every receipt for the work actually carried out since day one. I bought the RAV from a local independant car dealer and he passed all this paperwork on to me.

I actually googled the name of the previous wner and found thier phone number, I spoke to the lady who had owned it from new and once I explained who I was and that I now had her car, she was most helpful and confirmed that it had been a really good car with no issues at all.

Probably going a bit far, but it certainly gave me more peace of mind bearing in mind I had never had a RAV before.

Its just one year since I bought it, and it has performed without any issues apart from needing a throttle body clean within the first five weeks of ownership.

It will be on there computer, if you ask Mr parts sting nicely, and I've heard he can be won over with pies? he may pull up the details for you. ;-)

The people on the desk do get a very worried look on there faces when you ask for such paper work.........you would think they were fiddeling the books or something.

Then a sign of relife when they find them :-)
