Battery Charging

Hi all, I suspected a faulty Battery as it would appear to be the original. I'm not so sure now. I can hear the drive belt (sounds as if it's slipping very slightly). I tested the Battery voltage which was 11.48volts then started the engine and the voltage increased to 14.11volts. Then I measured the voltage with the engine running & lights and fan and radio on and the voltage was 14.16volts does anyone know if this is ok output (Measured across the Battery terminals)from the alternator under these conditions or should it be higher. Also has anyone a drawing for the routing of the drive belt or can suggest a website where I can get one from (preferably for free). I'm going to change the belt anyway but don't fancy forking out for an alternator as well and possibly a battery, being that its nearly 7years old now. Regards to all.

The Battery voltage of 11.48 volts isn't too bad for such an age of Battery but why not get the Battery load tested - most decent battery suppliers (not you usual fast-fit outlets) will have the proper kit and most do not charge.

Also if the engine is stiil on its original auxiliary belt it's time for a change anyway.

Hi, had a problem with my car that sounds the same as yours at first thought it was the Battery and it turned out to be the starter motor, even bought a new Battery before I discovered what the problem was but that just delayed failiure for a few weeks.

Had it sorted by having the armature recut and new bushes fitted cost about £40 but that was with me taking the starter motor out myself.

But if you have the time have a look at the starter motor to see what condition its in.
