Yaris Hybrid

... my girlfriends mostly drove it today ...

How many do you have and do they know about each other?

Sorry couldn't resist.

Please don't tell!!

Drove Wrexham to Queensferry today to pick my 3 children up, mostly 70mph dual carriageway and averaged 54mpg. Due to me having my 3 children today and my girlfriend Leanna having a 2 year old we had to use both cars so reset both mpg did a trip to town the hybrid averaged 70mpg while my Golf TDI averaged 44mpg. By the end of the day after both cars doing the same route at the same time the hybrid had averaged 60mpg the Golf 46mpg this included some dual carriageways.

What I have noticed is the MPG does drop with short trips and at high speed. Its somewhere close to costing half what my old LPG Focus auto to run. I think the Golf could give it a run for its money on a long run on motorways providing there isn't too much traffic.

What did surprise me today was while driving the Golf with Leanna following was seeing another Yaris Hybrid, two on the same road.

McDrivingSchool..ah another ex LPG man.

I had my 1.6 Auto Nissan Note running on LPG (with Flashlube) and was getting between 55 and 59mpg equivalent. Course thats using a light touch and cruise control. The Yaris gave me 61.5 over the weekend and it's now done 700 miles. So it might loosen up a bit more.

BTW Whens the first service on these Hybrids?

I find in my Yaris D4D I'm better off accelerating more briskly, shortshifting up the gear box to get to the higher gears ASAP to abuse the torque, then doing some pulse/glide coasting in-gear. Gentle acceleration actually seems to give slightly worse mpg! Doesn't seem universal to all diesels tho' - Friends with heavier diesel cars (Mostly Audis and VWs) find gentle acceleration works better, so YMMV as they say

Yes: I find the same: on my d4d, hard acceleration and coast is better then slow acceleration... (and better to clean out the catalyst/EGR valve etc as well).

A new car engine is not really run in until after 10,000 miles give or take a few thousand so new Yaris drivers have got a lot of driving to do before fuel consumption improves to near quoted levels.

(which is why I only buy 2-3 year old cars: let someone else run it in and take the 50% depreciation hit!:-)

Other wrong advice from Dealers, includes the infamous use of B-mode

Yes the "B" mode one seems to be a favourite among road-testers (reading the manual would be beneath their dignity) - example:

"I also made much use of the "B" mode on the gear selector, which increases the motor's efficiency as a generator when the car isn't under power, and is a useful alternative to the brake pedal if you want either to reduce speed gradually or to maintain your pace while going downhill."

According to manufactures, modern engines don't need running in as such, and certainly not 10,000 miles to do so. You might mean to loosen up. I am still doubtful about people getting 70+mpg.

Strange then that many diesel users find fuel consumption improves gradually until they have done over 10,000 miles..

Modern manufacturing tolerances may mean running in as such is not needed but machined parts still need to bed in. With the widespread use of synthetic oils as a first fill, that will take a long time due to the low friction. And with valves designed to revolve in their seats to minimise wear , there will definitely be a small bedding in process.

Piston rings specifically need bedding in which is why a combination of synthetic oils in anew engine and gentle driving with no hard acceleration can lead to glazing of the bores and high oil consumption.

Sounds like it could be a replacement for our Aygo and Prius in a couple of years when we need to go down to one car... provided I can fit in the damn thing!! (I tried the new Yaris when it first came out and had problems with my long legs)

thumbsup.gif

well we've done it! Prius and Aygo are going next week and the t-spirit Yaris arrives! -

Not been around for a while, but who knows, I may well be back on here with queries as you guys seem to know it all!

...............it does not go far on EV but there is every reason to use it, it's free mileage!!

Yep it's free - in the same way that a meal is free if you settle the bill with a credit card - you have to pay for it later. All the energy used in the car started life in the fuel tank..

A new car engine is not really run in until after 10,000 miles give or take a few thousand ...........

I wasn't getting over 55mpg consistently until the car had done 11,000 miles.

Both my Prius were at one year/10k miles, I'm assuming the Yaris is the same

Hi Tone, long time since you were here :)

On the right hand side of the page where the user name is of the last poster and the time they posted at, click that and it should take you to the last post. Were you clicking on the left where the title of the post is? Enjoy the new Hybrid Yaris. What colour did you get?

'morning!

Ordered a T4 in decuma grey last week, a bit of a change from my 206xsi which is now just over 10 years old! So now the wait begins...

What is the current waiting time? I'm thinking of buying one as a present for my surviving to become an OAP ... (eek!)

Well the computer gave a 3 months factory lead-time but the dealer reckoned that it would probably be 6 weeks or so.

Wait? I drove mine away seven days from ordering it. I could have had it in three. Whats with all this waiting stuff?

Which dealer in Essex is making you wait?

Not in Essex, the most convenient dealer for me is Jemca Bromley. Would be nice to have it in a week but waiting doesn't bother me that much, it's ready when it's ready...

Ahaaa Kent. You need to be dealing with those Essex boyzz from Sarfend....

Guess I just chose a popular spec/ colour then.

Good things come to those who wait. :flowers:

My dealer, yes Lancaster at Rayleigh) says that after mine and the black t4 they have there they are not expecting anymmore till later in the year! - apparently the hybrid is going quicker than anyone expected!
