Rattling When Started From Cold

Evening all, found this to be a useful site.

Bought a 2007 Verso D4D 2.2 TS, great car just slightly concerned about a grinding type noise that I can hear when first starred (last about 3-4 mins). Just wandering whether this could be air con related, or something else. Sound/grinding is only prominent when car is started from cold, then dies down after a few mins. You can only hear it when you put load on the car, not when it's idle, also mostly prominent between 1500:2000 revs, approx - Any ideas?

Are you able to get someone to start the car whilst you listen to see where the noise is coming from?

If the old grey matter is working correctly the engine is chain driven, so it might just be the serpentine belt.

Thanks for your reply, not sure what you suggested is going to be feasable, as sound is only heard when car is in motion. I'm beginning to think that sound may be bearings in gearbox as opposed to air con, as you can slightly hear sound when in higher gears, even after 4/5 mins of driving. I've got it booked in with Mr T under used car warranty - will give update next week, in meantime let us know if you or anyone else may have explanation to noise.
