Reversing Sensors?

As some of you know our Rav had the reversing sensors already installed when we bought it.

The tone off em is very noticable outside the car, even from some distance away.

But when Mrs Ps sister visited us yesterday in her 07 Rav we could not hear the sensors outside the car at all when reversing.

So should you be able to hear the beep beeping tone when reversing from outside the car??

No Paul. They are to warn the Driver not those outside the car, Your Neighbours would get hacked off if they could hear them every time You leave the house ?? Especially if like Me its often at 5 in the morning .....

On some cars You can turn the volume up and down so maybe this explains the difference between the two cars ..

I did put in my post, but deleted it, that they are noisey first thing in the morning when Mrs P as to reverse in and out the garge a couple of times to get it out.Because the car is pretty close to what i have in the garage the sensors pick that up and beeps as soon as in reverse.

The noise though does seem to be coming from the sensors on the bumper??

I'll go and have a look in a bit.

How do you turn the volume down then if it is that??

You would have to look in the book Paul.. Some systems differ. Some You car alter the volume some You cant and again it can differ from model to model...

Well the noise is definately coming from the sensors on the back from outside.

Charlie-which manual would that be, the Haynes one?

Dave- i would say the noise sounds the same inside and out.

I have found a Toyota booklet that was in the binder but doesn't really say much, just operating instructions.

Dont know about the Toyota system but on the Jag I go into vehicle settings on the screen and select PDC. Then I can turn the volume up and down and also select an exterior beeper if I want it but I dont so I dont...

It also has a reversing camera but I find I tend not to look where the front of the car is !!! Not good....

Its also possible to select the sensitivity and how close You are when the tone goes continuous to let You know that You are really close..

Paul I meant the cars user manual..

I dont think 4.2 reversing sensors are that high tech Charlie. Mine looks crude but does the job, there is no mention of them in the manual......must be an after market add on.

Do these come as standard on 4.2s I belive mine is OEM fitted but certainly looks after market to me.

Wouldn't surprise me Jedi.

Charlie haven't a clue about that and the on screen info, does the Rav have that function??

I have looked in the users manual but can't find anything about the reversing sensors??

The bit about switching the outside tone off would sound correct if it did do that?

Not sure about that Jedi, they do look like they have been fitted properly as they are painted same colour as the Rav and have then across the back bumper as shown in this piccy.

Hi Paul,

They look like the TGB ones; we have the same on our VX. They are definitely after market - I'm pretty certain that the 4.2 didn't have them as standard or factory option. Our TGB dealer fitted them. There is no way of altering the volume. However, I also had some fitted to the 4.2 D4D I used to have & those were not TGB but pattern from another maker & they weren't a patch on the TGB ones.

You definitely shouldn't hear them outside the car, unless you have the windows open. Is it possible that the previous owner had reversing warning buzzers (i.e. for warning peds that you are backing up) fitted as well? They are mandatory on HGV's and on vans over a certain weight & you do see them now & again on cars. If so, they aren't necessarily a bad accessory to have (I see that in Calif. they are now mandatory on all new 4x4's/ SUV's, etc. - it could eventually happen here bearing in mind the EU's love of new motoring regs).

Ask the dealer who the previous owner was & phone them up & ask.

Jim

Hello Jim.

Sorry for been a bit daft but what is TGB??

So you think they may have been fitted after.

I think Anchorman said that they could have been an option from new,i will have a look back at the old posts.

To be honest we did think they were a warning as well for pedestrians when reversing and didn't think nothing of it until we saw Mrs Ps sisters Rav reverse with no beep beeping been heared from outside.

We just didn't know if they were supposed to be heared or not

Paul with the Jag all equipment fitted can be altered or played with Via the factory fit 8" screen that displays all the cars functions and the Navigation, Radio ect ect.

On the Rav with factory Navigation it does pretty much the same But I do not have Park sensors on the Rav so it does not come up.

I think TGB means original equipment fitted at the factory or at the Dealers during PDI. The clue is in the body coloured sensors.

Charlie.

Just stick a 'Long Vehicle' and an HGV sticker on the back and you'll be fine Paul

Hi Paul,

Apologies for my short-hand. TGB = Toyota Great Britain; I use it when referring to official Toyota dealers. They may have been an option on the 2003> 4.2 but they certainly weren't in 2002 otherwise we would have had them on ours and I still have the original brochures from when we bought the car (although admittedly they are in French!).

If it is as noticeable as you say at the rear of the car, it must be a reversing warning buzzer??

Thanks Charlie and Jim

So what is PDI :(

If its a warning buzzer it does only beep when it is near summat as it should i suppose, but as i say is audible from some distance,so do Toyota supply these sensors like this and does anyone else have em??

Just curious now.

Hi Paul,

PDI = pre-delivery inspection. It's the programme that the dealer puts all new vehicles through before they are handed over to the first owner. It includes simple things like removing all the protective coatings and packing pieces in the suspension, etc., checking all the fluids, tyre pressures, etc. plus more complex stuff like programming the on-board diagnostics in the ECU, setting parameters for the tyre pressure systems (for run-flats, for example) & it will also sometimes include the fitting of optional eqpt where it's cheaper for the dealer to do it in the PDI than for it to be done in the factory prior to shipping. When you consider that the shipping costs for vehicles coming from Japan are determined by weight, it can pay them to leave off certain bits for fitting at the point of supply. I've heard of some manufacturers who used to arrange for local supply of things like wheel trims, door mirrors, spare wheels, etc. rather than ship them half-way around the world and have to pay for the privelege!

It's possible that they might do an OEM warning buzzer for Toyota commercial vehicles but I don't honestly know. Parts King might be able to tell you.

Good idea re PK.I will indeed ask him unless someone pops up with a reply.

I saw this in another car forum. The toyota fitted parking sensor (that I had in my earlier RAV4), had a small speaker tucked near the rear light cluster. Open that flap from inside the car that reveals the light cluster (you may have to look at both sides) and see if you can locate the parking sensor's controller and speaker. If the controller or the speaker has a volume adjustment button, your problem is solved. Other wise wrap a sponge around the speaker and put a rubber band around it and it will be damped by a few decibels.

Thanks for that Rajiv

I will take a peek when i get a chance and let you know.

I'm wondering if all the 4.2's had retrofit systems as the 2005 spec on the Toyota Archives doesn't show any model having parking sensors

This is the back of our Rav which has parking sensors, we have a sensor in each corner bumper but we also have x2 sensors along the inside of the door

I have those, I don't think they are parking sensors, just coverings that look like them.
