Avensis Whistle At 60Mph+

Hi Folks,

My Avensis is making a whistle sound, it starts at 60mph and increases in pitch the faster i go.

Cant quite detect where its coming from as can only hear when driving, but in general I would say engine, or front of car. It is quite a loud whistle.

It doesnt sound when I go less than 60mph, so cant replicate when car is running idle. Doesnt seem to be linked to revs or braking either, just speed.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

Shamus

How old is the car?

Does it happen when your on and off the gas? Or when its only in gear?

Are you old enough to be driving

Are you sure its not wind noise coming through the rubber door seal you can hear?

it a 2005 t3-s estate.

Yes, the noise does stay when im on and off the gas, but i have not tried it out of gear at that speed, will do tomorrow.

I will check the rubber door seals in the morning but I dont think it is this, last time I gave the car a good clean all door seals were good.

  • 2 months later...

I own a new shape wagon and mine does it too. It is LHD and the noise comes from the general area of the driver "A" pillar, in the region of door mirror. I checked the seals and that doesn't seam to be a problem. I used a recent long distance trip to check that. I was on 120km/h using cruse control for about 200km, and plenty of time to press and push the rubbers around the door and window. Nothing changed the whistling sound. The only think that was changing the pitch of the sound was THE CROSSWIND!!! and it sounds more like the "wind sucked out of the cabin" that "blown into the cabin"... Also, one thing that changes the pitch dramatically is when I press the button and fold wing mirrors. Also I noticed a crack on the wing mirror indicator, and soon I will glue it to see if that crack was producing the noise, or caused some suction that in some way reached the inside of the door. I will post the results.
