Anybody know of the latest laws on mounting SPOT LIGHTS (not FOGlights) on the roof of a car? These SPOT lights have a pencil beam which is white in colour and switched on/off with the main beam only.Read a few threads on other sites, but have'nt got any definite answer really

Bazmin,

Seems like a common sense wan to me, mucker....these should NOT come on with the main beam for fear of being used deliberately or inadvertently to dazzle fellow road users. They should be separately switched and used only in times of such pursuits as off roading or mountain rescue in the hills of Argyllville.

This is purely a personal opinion, but guarantee there are not many constabulary members would disagree...can see the point of having them where you live, but they really can be a blasted nuisance also too forbye.....

pretty sure that there is a specific law about having - or rather USING - lights above a certain height on a vehicle on a public road for exactly the reason that Kev states. What you do OFF the Public Road is another matter entirely.

There is also the question about the angel eye spot lights as there seems to be plenty on the top of trucks.

Are they the ones you were thinking of using?

You can do pretty much whatever you want with sensible logic applied, when i did my CPC this was covered, too many and the electrical system will go bang though!

Mounting stuff to the roof directly is a very bad idea.

So distance from side of vehicle legislated but not height?

Explains all the mobile Christmas Trees on the Motorways :D

Common sense dictates that u use Dipped beam when another vehicle approches, I'm using them for Distance as u would aggree .you need to spot the deer in advance ! or u get one H of a mess to clear up!Believe me, u dont want to get in the road of one of these beasts, they can do LOTS of dammage to a car.The reason for wiring up to main beam is so they can b switced off quickly .I think there should b a more CLEAR non confusing law on this ,and not so confusing. As it is, I'm going ahead and fitting them.to the roof and wiring to m/b.Thanks for all the replies and comments.

When i sold vehicles to blue light users, we always mounted them to the roof bars. They can make a lot of noise and will knock some MPG off, fitted directly to the roof rust will appear quite quickly.

Glad there are no rules...as use mine on high beam all the time,BUT i do keep an eye out for oncoming vehicles around bends etc.

AS....DO NOT WANT TO BLIND THEM.. :nono:

Mind you, when someone blinds me......then its a different story.. :censor: ON THEY GO...but briefly.
