i have an 04 plate yaris 1.3vvt-i the engne light came on 15 months ago i got it checked and repaired as it was the timing chain. last week engine light came on again got it tested and appears to be camshaft position sensor so i got that changed. light is back on tested again same thing came up. im very confused as i been told the timing could be out again. i went to toyota and enquired they said for them to have a look would cost me £150. they also confirmed it probably is my timing again but its not within its warranty as i had it done 15 months ago. the original one lasted 6yrs at 83,000 miles i only done 14,000 since they fitted the last one can this be right? would appreciate any help or advice.

You need to get the fault codes read. Most independent garages will have an EOBD codereader. They should give you a printout of the codes. If you then post them I can help you much better. Timing chains last a long time unless the engine oil has not been changed and the tesioner has given up.

If oil changes have been neglected the VVT valve may be inoperative and either need cleaning or renewing. First move is the fault codes.

P1346 is a Toyota specific code which indicates a problem with the VVT sensor / camshaft position sensor circuit range / performance.

It means that the ECU has regognised that the information it is receiving from the camshaft position sensor and the crankshaft position sensor do not tally as they should, which indicates that the timing is out. The cause may be an incorrectly fitted chain or a faulty camshaft position sensor or its wiring.
