Top Gear "duffers"

I was browsing the Top Gear site (work's pretty boring today and my boss is on holiday...) and took a look in the Yaris part of the "Duffers" section. Here are excerpts from 2 of the 4 reader-written sub-articles:-

On the day I took it to the new dealership, the onboard fuel use read-out went mad saying we were getting 99.99 miles to the gallon and then within a second 29.00.

The miles per gallon reading on the on board computer was very optimistic. The mileage reading we took ourselves gradually went downhill until eventually we were only getting 30 miles per gallon out of the car on a run.

Now - and maybe I'm being a little unfair here - isn't this a case of RTFM :bookworm: and a misunderstanding of how the "mpg-meter" works?
