Have noticed that ever since i had my VSV & EGR valves cleaned,my Rav drinks almost double the fuel it used to.

What would cause ....over fueling ,would this cause my engine hesitation ?

Rambs, are you seriously saying TWICE as much fuel or 4-5 mpg more? Over winter when you spend a lot of time with the engine idling to keep warm or are using a lot more electrical equipment, it can drop your mpg quite a bit, but even towing a large caravan doesn't cause your mpg to halve... :o Stew

hi matey

1. the reason of VSV and EGR cleaning ? (scheduled maintenance or what ?)

2. overfueling is caused by several issues and in order to list all of them please reply the 1st question.

cheers/Igor

Hi chaps.

Over fueling......my rav has just drank 1/4 tank in about approx 30 miles ! ! !.doing approx 70 mph...scary watching the guage going down.

It never used to drink as much as this...

No leaks,smells.

Igor......VSV & EGR valve cleaning was an attempt to cure engine hesitation..didnt work.

Having turbo actuator arm looked at this thurs.....on LH' friends experiences.

1. 30 miles <=> 48 kms ---- 1/4 tank = abt 15 ltr --- looks very strange.--you should check with primer sensor workability or its control system up to the fuse responsible (up to dashboard indicating dial.

2. the hesitation is caused by : SCV; turbo; poor injection (overfueling); injection timing; engine air filter; fuel filter -i exclude EGR and VSV as inspected by you.

but in any case 1/4 of the tank is supposed to be due to diesel level sensor/s failure (control circuit)

cheers/Igor

Think Igor got it spot on there Jamie....your fuel sender (float) unit is faulty / on way out / suddenly poorly earthed....?

Are you getting any: black smoke?

Uneven running/vibration/knocking on start up?

High engine temp readings?

Next step has got to be to simply go to a service station and fill up the tank and see if what you put in agrees with what the gauge is telling you!

Remember overfueling (too rich) can also be caused by too little air so there may be an air inlet problem.

Well........

I always fill to brim every thurs afternoon ( finish work early ),if i only used the Rav locally on the Sunday to drive locally to a walk....normally within 20 miles of where i live.

It would normally cost approx £20 to fill up.( just over 1/4 tank) next thurs

But since having work done,i'm doing £35 a week ( half a tank )......

I apologise if this is a bit vaigue....but tricky to explain.

I will take your answer to my previous questions as no, but should you be having any of the ones I mention then I would have your fuel injectors cheked for spray pattern and trim, or at least a leak back test carried out. If you have a leaking injector this can cause power problems and chuck fuel into the bores causing wash out and over time damage the CAT.

Hi Spedo

Sorry for not directly replying

The Rav is fine on cold starts, no troubles, ( nothing other than usual ,starts fine runs ok ),it just hesitates or kicks when you floor it for full power.(when driving it)

This can be when partially warmed up, or normal operating temp.

I never floor it on cold starts.....always wait for some warmth of the engine and driven for a few miles.

I am thinking this is still a simple boost pressure problem, which may be caused by a vac leak somewhere. Perhaps pressurising the system via the air intake would show up a leak to rule it in or out. Another way would be to find somewhere that uses a smoke pro to check for leaks. You of course should not rule out a mechanical problen such as a bad valve. Try having a look at the Electronic Diesel control Unit (EDU) and check the wire harness plugs are clean and tight. Sometimes the unit can get conflicting signals through a bad connection from one of the sensors.
