Rav 4.2 Component Query

Following on from my 'soggy saga' posting (!), in the course of drying out everywhere in our RAV 4.2....

Inside the rear door on the LH is the access hatch to the storage area above the LH rear wheel arch. This also covers a small opening which gives access to the rear of the fuel filler cover catch. Adjacent to this was a small black box, about 2-3" square, fixed to the inside of the body exterior panel, with an electrical socket and cables at the bottom. What is this - some form of alarm sensor perhaps?

And yes, there were condensation droplets all in around there as well :disgust:

On my 2003 4.2, in roughly the location you describe (just below the LH storage compartment), there's a 12v 120W power outlet - cigar lighter style - fitted. Is it possible you have the wiring, but not the socket?

I don't think so. There are several wires - more surely than just a simple 12V power outlet socket - and the 'black box' is fixed to the outside 'skin' of the vehicle, which made me think perhaps about as 'bump' motion sensor. When looking into the smaller access hole, it is to the left (ie nearer to the back of the car) of the fuel filler.

If you have the genuine Toyota wiring harness for a towbar there is a switching relay mounted on that side in the corner ?

No towbar, but I do have reversing sensors - sadly only the 2-sensor version, fitted by the dealer when we bought the car 2nd-hand. Sounds like the answer - thanks!
