Metalic Tapping Noise When Cold First 5 Minuts

Hi Guys

Avensis D4D on 06 plate 105 K miles. I have had new head fitted with all the rest of bits and bobs to go with it under waranty by mr.T about 20 K ago. I have now noticed this metalic tapping noise from engine when cold, specialy when very cold. That goes away after about 5 mins, obviously oil gets warmer, engine also uses oil but not alarming amount.

Mr. T can't hear anything as I was expecting (usles dealers with pretty secretaries to smooth things over). Any one any idea what can cause that noise? I have also noticed a little pool of oil on top of rocker cover round 3rd injector from the left where the electrics are plugged in but I suspect this will be just the seal?

Feedback from you guys is invaluable. Thanx.

Could be piston slap due to very cold weather! or maybe injector rattle? The oil leak I would have thought is a seal or the gasket! A picture would help mind you...

as vissible you ve changed cyl head but nothing was reported abt parts overhauling belong to the sae cyl head such us injectors. you can understand that 105 K miles might be due for injectors. your head ache is belong to all injectors calibrating on the fuel stand. cheers/Igor

Hope this picture will illustrate better what I'm talking about. Red arrow points to the place where I found pool of oil.

Could someone help please!

I think I know what you are talking about, I would also agree with what was said earlier, piston slap

It is noticeable the change in engine noise as its warming up. I would suspect that some oil would be consumed in this warming up phase, as my oil level has gone down slightly, just below max in the past few months whereas before it wasn't using any oil

Not sure about the "pool of oil" you describe, that's one for the dealer

Yes I have left the car overnight at Mr. T, 'cos morning is the only time one can hear that noise.

Hmm, a trip to another dealer then for a fresh set of eyes/ears?

I have the exact same problem on one cylinder, Mr T could not hear it, my wife and son can, I could hear it when I drove away from Mr T.

It's symtoms of piston slap, although I do not use oil. Subaru and General motors are having same problems as well. Subaru say it will not affect the life of the engine, i wonder.

Out of sheer interest I`d bung in a good splash of two stroke oil into the diesel and see if it helps.

It quietened the cold start on all the engines I used it in.
