Auris 2008 1.4 Diesel Cold Start

Hello,

I am concerned about my Auris engine, this last week in my country it is around -20 till -30 grades. Yesterday, when I started my car - it took me quite long time. At the beggining of this week in Toyota service I had replaced 3 glow plugs out of 4, because they were dead (2 were permanently, the 2 left ones somehow helped me to start a car for 1 day).

I am just curious if this is ok for a quite new engine to start so hard.. You can see a video, which I took yesterday - for you to show, because I want some user advice what to do.

Also I have in addition question - this Power Heat function - I can use it all the time while I am driving in this cold outside? If I turn it off, my engine looses temperature, so currently - I have left it on all the time - starting engine, driving, when turning off. Is that ok?

Thanks in advance.

I'd be really happy if my car started in -20, -30... Could be the diesel waxing as its so cold...

When it's that cold I'd probably let the glow plugs pre-heat two or three times - in other words turning the key on and off two or three times, waiting for the glow plug light to go out each time.

What grade oil are you using. it needs to at the the most a 0w 30.

WHich country are you,do you normaly get very low temps

In Canada they have crankcase heaters that plug into the mains.

If your country has very low temps would have thought these heaters would have been a standard fitting.

Here in Bulgaria, this year we got the same harsh winter as "martins23". Some of us use fuel additives that prevent diesel waxing, other use premium diesel which (claimed by the petrol stations) will not freeze until -25 or -30. The Bulgarian standart for winter diesel is -15 degrees centigrade, so below that you are done. There are many reports for engine stalling even in movement, because of the temperatures reaching below -15 during the trip.

The bad thing here is that if the fuel waxed, there could be wax in the fuel filter and it could jam the filter.

You could try putting the car in a warmer place (above 0 degrees) for 5-6 hours at least, then pour a bottle of such additive and then wait another 5-6 hours atleast. You could have problems starting again couse the fuel in the filter will not be treated but after starting run for atleast 15 miles (just in case) and then keep your fingers crossed it was just fuel waxing.

If its that cold I'd deff use a fuel additive... Some use 28sec heating oil to thin the fuel!... Why not try and lag the filter and fuel pipes ect to help stop the freeze? My mate lives in Canada and he's had it there at -35!!!... So they have heaters that plug into the cars!... Most over there don't run diesels because of the waxing that can and will happen!... Petrol is the way to go! Like most things now!... But I do love the grunt of a Jap oil burner :eat:

Ahh,not so happy days on snow covered, windy lorry parks lighting small fires under fuel tanks and hot ashes under filters.

When the fire under the tank was extinguished, then adding something like 5% of petrol to stop it refreezing.

We had to use petrol as there would be hell to pay if pulled in by C&E on a fuel check!!!

They dont like missing out on their cut of fuel tax.

If I have this power heat function on - my engine is not loosing it's temperature, If I turn it off then yes - while driving engine - it is not warming up more then 3 levels, if car is stale and not moving, so there could be left 2 units of engine warm indicator..

Currently I am warming up glow plugs 3-5 times in the morning and only then starting my engine. In daytime if I am at my work - I start a car after 3-4 hours of idle state- it starts normally, and that is till the next morning when I have this trouble.

I live in Latvia - I am using this Diesel Fortis+ fuel, which is with some addons for engine to run better from STATOIL.
