Undiagnosed Problems And Warranties

Reading the Sunday Times today I wasn't best pleased to find that one of their 'investigations' has uncovered a secret policy that during routine inspections, any faults that are not flagged up by the customer are to be overlooked by technicians and not fixed as a matter of routine. Only after the warranty has expired are the garages free to mention these issues to customers who can then have them fixed at their own expense. What a shabby philosophy. So if you think there may be an issue with anything - tell 'em.

I hope you don't believe everything you read in a newspaper? :)

My dealers are more than helpful and Toyota are also very good for warranty work and claims. If they weren't I wouldn't buy one and certainly wouldn't buy a Prius. If I wanted half assed service I'd have got a Citroen.

Put it another way. My girlfriend bought her Toyota purely on the excellent service I'd got from the local Toyota dealer. She'd had enough of the local Honda dealership and would never buy another Honda for that reason. Good service goes a long way.

I cannot say this is true of my Toyota dealer. They changed a brake cylinder on my previous Toyota Gen 2 a day before the warranty expired. It was on its 3 year service. They said it was not necessary to change it but it was liable to fail in the next year.

I'd have to agree 100% with everything you've said

I certainly don't believe everything I read in the so-called 'news' papers. Stories in 'news'papers are to be taken with a few very large pinches of salt.

I have always found my local Toyota dealership (Donnelly and Taggart) to be excellent. The staff are very professional, helpful and friendly. That is why I keep going back to them and will continue to do so. Great service and great products - that's what keeps customers coming back. I would highly recommend my local dealership and Toyota to anyone. As I've said on here before, I have my eye on the new Yaris....planning on getting one in a few months time.

I've had rubbish service from certain other dealerships and wouldn't set foot in them since, such as Vauxhall being the worst I have come across.

I haven't had any dealer problems either so far but I don't dismiss Times investigations as quickly as some other papers. Just thought I'd flag it up.

Well I'm sure it'll be all over the other papers like a rash tomorrow. And they'll go on and on and on til everyone is sick of reading about it.

Thanks for giving us the heads up on it, otherwise I wouldn't have heard about it except from today's posts here.

If half of this is true of Toyota, I would expect considerably more harsh and dangerous practices to be going on with others. From what I have seen of some 2nd hand BMWs, Mercedes and VAG, the practice seems to be widespread and more common than most people would like to think particularly with the so called high quality (resting on laurels) german manufacturers. I dont know anyone with a new porsche but I believe that the Porsche rate almost as high as the prius in reliability and so faults in warranty must be minimal.
