Just a minor problem with the poll ....

No matter how you answer the first question, you HAVE to also answer the second question !! so you need to add a NONE

oh - just like Gus said :chair:

Sorry but I think the poll is the` icing on the cake/final nail in the coffin` for 2.2d residual values.

Anyone thinking about one will be rightly or wrongly warned off. :o

Be greatful you don't buy an out of warranty one with the oil problems :D

I think the polls a great idea :D

These will crop up all the time in a few years when there's no warranty on them.

Landrover Freelanders get bad press but they still go for top dollar.....

And both are reasons a lot of people bought a Rav4 instead

People come onto forums for help and answers, usually in the negative, a poll will be biased towards only people with problems who will answer, the masses who have no problems will never get the chance to have their say

There's one of these polls on the Freelander forums.

Would you buy a Freelander again, is the title...

90% say no way.

But they still sell for the same moneys as other similar vehicles :D

Sales men will always find a victim......Err buyer :D

That is why I, as a TOC Forum Member for around 5 years, have bought a RAV4 2.2D in full knowledge of the apparently massive number of people who have had new engines.

As Kingo says, the majority of people come onto a Forum to post questions for their problems; They don't generally come on to say how they have had no issues with their vehicle.

If you were to go onto ANY specific make/model forum as a way to decide whether or not to purchase a vehicle based on reported problems, chances are you would not buy a SINGLE car of ANY make

Hi Kingo,

I think that you have to remember how many how many 2.2 D4-D engined RAV's we have on the forum. If I found that 50 had engine replacements it would not worry me unduly, if it was 250 that MIGHT be a bit different. Had mine done a month ago and the difference in fuel consumption is spectacular. Was getting mid-30s beforehand, now mid-40s. I'm watching the oid like a hawk but it is not moving.

One of the things that concerns me, after reading some of Anchorman's older comments, is my driving style. My previous vehicle had been a Vitara. That told you in no uncertain terms if you were in too high a gear for the vehicle speed/load. I'm wondering if the DMF in the RAV masks some of those indications. The temptation is to drive around town at 30 MPH in 5th gear with next to no throttle on. That, according to the OBD, gave the best possible economy - but did it overload ( "flog" ) the engine? I'll be driving round in a lower gear with this new engine so as to minimise the load on the DMF and avoid any chance of flogging. I just have a slightly guilty feeling that I may have contributed to the problem by driving it the way I did. Anyone else have any thoughts on this as a contributory factor? It would be difficult for Toyota to say in the drivers handbook "avoid flogging the engine" if the DMF hides the symptoms.

If your that worried no.3 you could just get someone to push the Rav around town for you... This would most probably give you an even higher OBD reading. :D

Engine Poll (Or at least trying)

Dale,

poll is an excellent idea. How hard would it be to add a question about how many miles the vehicle had done when the engines(s) were replaced? I only ask because if we find that all failures are, say, below 40k miles, anyone who had got to 70k would have a higher degree of confidence that they hadn't got a problem engine. I do know that not all engines are a problem as my XT5 has a "twin" which was purchased on the same day at the same dealer by my brother. My daughter now has the car and it has done best part of 50k and averages high 40s MPG and uses no oil! Don't know how she does it as she has a decidedly leaden right foot!!!! Mine has only done 32k

Sorry about asking for a modification at this stage - it's very cheeky - but I'm a slow thinker.

Adding a poll is easy, the problem with another question is those who have aleady answered cant vote again AFAIK.

Cheers Dale - didn't think about that. I think there is an option to cancel your answers, maybe if you do you can vote again?

If that's what it takes to conserve your engine, I will gladly send some helpers from the darkside, that are currently on community service :D

Also would it be any bother to add the year of engine. Maybe certain years suffered more?

I sometimes wonder if i would have been better off not joining this Forum, don't get me wrong i have enjoyed my time on here and made lots of friends, but for 10yrs i was driving the most reliable vehicle in the world and never even considered breaking down or DMFs or engine replacements, and now after 13yrs of ownership (3 Ravs) i still haven't had any breakdowns but now I worry that i might.. We on here are a relatively small group of Rav owners and are aware of some of the problems, but i do not believe the general public or indeed motor dealers, (other than Mr T..and not all of them) are aware of engine replacements, My own brother has just bought one and he was not aware till i told him. when i tell my workmates what car i drive they virtually all say about the legendary Toyota reliability.. And i can only add in 13+ yrs of Rav ownership, I have never been off the road and never spent One penny on repairs, so i would not worry about a poll tarnishing the Ravs reputation..Though i have to ask, what is the poll for  Stew

It helps them as had no issues feel superior and gives the worriers something to focus on.

Does't help the unfortunate few one bit..................

Exactly my point, a lot of clued up people come on to a forum specifically to research the faults on a particular model before buying one.
