Accelerator Failure

My car is an avensis verso 2.0.automatic and the accellerator suddenly went down on the motorway and the brakes went stiff. what could be the problem even though the engine was running.Any ideas

If the brakes went stiff then the hose from the intake manifold to the brake servo may have failed. Dependent upon how this happened additional air would have leaked into the fuel mixture affecting the running of the engine.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'accelerator suddenly went down' - do you mean the engine revs increased?

How are the brakes performing now?
