Auris D4D Newbie - Puff Of Blue Smoke - Rev's At Tickover

Hi Forum

This is the first diesel i've ever owned and for the last two weeks every little rattle concerns me - so i've a couple of points to ask about

Q1. Is it normal for the tickover revs to vary between 800 - 1200 rpm depending on the load from things turned on like fan, heater, screen demister etc

Q2. Is it normal to get a puff of blue'ish smoke starting the car in the cold after the car standing for a period of time - after the inital puff there are no other signs of any smoke

Feedback on the above would be appreciated just in case I need to raise the issue with the dealer I bought it from 2 weeks ago

Thanks

Stu

Welcome to TOC mate...

If its like my Avensis then its normal for the rpm to go up and down if you have the heaters/blowers or air con on!... But the blue smoke at start up is something I'd want to have checked out! My car doesn't blow out any, nor does my 212k Polo TDi at start!... What milage is the car? Its a 2008 model year?

Is the car using any oil ?

Does it fire straight up in the morning ?

And if it's like every car I've owned it is not normal for the idling revs to fluctuate on a Diesel, not to the tune of 400 anyway. That's what a governor (if fitted) or an e.c.u. is for, to vary the fuel supply depending on load and revs. There will be a change in the engine note but that's because load has been increased or decreased and fuel adjusted accordingly.

If the glow plugs and their control unit are working properly and the engine is in good condition there should be no smoke of any colour when it starts.

Have you owned the car for two weeks or has this only been happening for the last two weeks? Diesels can rattle a bit when cold.

I've owned the car for two weeks - the revs don't swing from 800-1200, a majority of the time it's 1000 and then goes up when I load it with the fan and demister etc, and the drops to 800 when warm and everything off. It was only a conern as every single petrol engine car i've had maintained tickover at 850 rpm.

There's no problem with the autostart it fires up first time. I wouldn't know if it's using a lot of oil as I've only had the car for two weeks and still on my first tank of VPower Diesel.

The car drives well and i'm quite relaxed about the rattle when cold as once warmed up a bit its hardly noticeable. I've only noticed the puff of smoke over the last week as I've started looking in the rear view mirror when starting the car........and not staring at the dashboard!

The automatic idle up feature is normal. Over on the Rav 4 section of this forum, you will see posts about an actual manual button to control this feature named... 'idle up'

Brill Phil! (& Others) on the idle issue

I only need to increase my knowledge on the blue'ish puff of smoke on start up

At 4yrs old parts will be a little worn and the really cold days make it extra hard to clean the dirty diesel, it could be wear on glow plugs or injectors or many other parts. If you try and start the car to early or late it could do this.

The T-Spirit is push button start so I can't control how early or late I start the car after the glow plugs warm up. I'll try and take a small video tomorrow and have a chat with the dealer.

Thanks forum for all your feedback so far, really useful

Whats the condition of the oil like? When was the last service and with what oil? A semi or full synth? I'd be thinking of taking the car back to the dealer if you're at all worried or concerned!... Dealers do get it wrong with the correct grade of oil sometimes!...I know this to well! I dont think that there is a massive problem with the glow plugs! If anything the blue smoke is more to do with worn oil control rings or turbo... But the main stealer would/should be able to point you in the right direction!...

Not checked the oil yet as i'm only finishing the second week of ownership.

Cars at 41.7K last serviced as 40.3K the car has always had a full main dealer service so hopefully they would have used the correct oil

I don't have the actual service sheets just the stamps in the book. It was serviced in Swansea (same garage) and I bought it in Leicester where I live

I'll try and take a little video clip and then go and see the dealer

Cheers

I popped out to the car and took a video - I also grabbed a still from the video - This was this morning at 07:30 after the car had been standing overnight

Your car is behaving as all DERVS do when starting from Cold, yes there is quite a delay between pushing the start button and the engine actually starting as the glow pugs have to heat up longer than normal. One little thing bothers me is that you have some blue smoke when the engine is running. If it was black smoke that would be ok but I would find out if the oil is old or the wrong/cheap grade, if you can't find that out renew the oil .

In addition to the clip I took this morning I have taken another just now before leaving work - the vehicle has been stood since 8.00 a.m. (now 3:45 p.m.) and the temperature has been around 1-3C all day

Does this still look like 'normal' smoke that may just require an oil change?

I think as I have only had the car 13 days it is something that I need to discuss with the Dealer (Not main Toyota dealer but a franchised Honda Dealer) - becuase if there is a fault the burden of responsibility should be with them

P.S.Apologies if this is annoying for the more experienced 'forumineers'

Are you starting it with your foot on the throttle and then revving it twice on the 2nd vid? Or is that what its like without doing anything?

How far is the drive to work?

Its does look a bit `bunged up` as though the injectors are not shutting off completely and dribbling a bit.

I would personally call that excessive.

My 2.2 has never produced any smoke on start up and I have had friends follow me when I have put my foot down, and nobody has ever said that it smokes.

The 1st clip I saw looked perfectly normal!... The 2nd didn't as it looked like there were 2 blips on the gas pedel when it was started as said by Mr Cab!... I would personaly change the fuel filter (If its not been done) and see how you get on...

Yep, I did blip it a bit on the second so not a fair comparison - The drive to work is about 20 miles - a mixture of dual carriageway and decent A roads

I think i'm worrying unecessarily......and just need to stop 'flapping'
