Different Auto Boxes On 2011 Rav4

I am curious about the fact that the Diesel RAV4.3 has a 6-Speed Automatic and the Petrol RAV4.3 has the "Multi-drive" 6-speed Automatic.

I think what I am most curious about is how come the official economy figures for the Petrol Auto is so close to the Diesel (37.2 mpg Petrol; 39.8 Diesel)?

I know the Toyota 'Multi-mode' auto was pretty poorly received & shortlived and think that was a CVT box as well (maybe the first attempt by Toyota?). Is the Multidrive S an updated version or a fully-new CVT box with all the lessons learnt? Anyone know anything about the Multidrive?

The Autobox in the current RAV4 SR is great to use and super-smooth. Anyone got the current Petrol XT-R Auto?

As far as I'm aware Your SR has a conventional auto box and not a cvt type. This is a very good thing as CVTs can be a nightmare and IMO should be avoided like the plague.. That said My Wife had an Audi convertible with a 3.0 V6 Multitronic which is a CVT based box and it was super smooth and never gave any issues at all !!
