Satnav Unit

I'm considering changing my B9004 head unit with one from Iceboxauto. http://cgi.ebay.co.u...E:X:RTQ:GB:1123

nothing wrong with my unit but Toyota doesn't supply Malta maps and also keen to have a USB port.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, according to the specs it does have a virtual 6 disk CD changer and the navigation seem to be quite reliable , GPS is also 3D graphical view, but as its a WinCE OS it can run any GPS software on WinCE platform such as FreeNavigator.

If there's any one who did see one running it would be of great interest to see how it goes.

My experience was I bought one arrived after a week or so. The sat Nav was Tom Tom. Worked a treat for around 6 weeks or so then one day would not power up. Checked fuses etc but everything was fine.

Tried to ring the customer support number and was told that Tbe units are from china and that they only process deliveries once units have arrived and I will have to email the seller.

I emailed Tbe seller and was asked to post unit back as all warranty work is carried out at the manufacturing plant. Cost £70 to post and that was the last I heard

Contacted PayPal and unfortunately was over the time limit. I ended up losing a little over£400

I'm not saying all sellers are like this but before you buy check the support numbers etc and make sure about warranty etc

In the end I ended up buying a pioneer avic f910 BT and it's brilliant was fitted for free and stopped working once after about 7 months. Took it back to Tbe retailer was replaced with another new unit and never had any problems ever since

I would recommend checking everything before you buy

I would treat those cheap chinese units sold on ebay as consumables. False economy.

Agree with you 100%

If you are able to install your own navigation software, The Blaupunkt New York 800 World at £450 (UK) £350 (DE import) is a halfway house on price/quality between the Pioneers and the Chinese tat.

Thats the problem for me with branded units you are tied down to what ever sat nav software comes with the unit? Is there any way of getting into the OS with them?

With the Chinese tat, the worlds your oyster........... :D

But I have no idea how reliable they are?.........I would certainly try one at the price....

Well, I'm going to buck the trend here and say that those Chinese units aren't bad for the price. I bought one to fit in the Surf and it was still going strong 2 and 1/2 years later when I sold the truck.

It had a remote control, sat nav, dvd player, mp3 player, bluetooth, reversing camera input, SD card slot and TV input (never even tried that). The sat nav OS was something well known but not Tomtom or Garmin and the sound quality was spot on for the price.

Can't remember if it was Eonon or xenon or something like that and I seem to remember it was only £179 including free delivery!

Thanks Mates for your input, me too once had an issue with one chinese e-bay seller with an I-phone had to ship it back at my cost and never heard from him again.

I considered that seller because he's from Liverpool UK but still it's a chinese stuff.

Jedi- the NY800 has Win Ce like the Chinese tat so you can load any nav program that is compatible in the same way. BTW Bosch sold blaupunkt a few years ago and so it may be lower in quality than previous expectations, however a warranty and the GUI is worth the extra.

I noticed that that seller is offering a SquareDeal warranty for £42. That makes this deal more attractive (to UK based buyers) as Squaredeal is a reputable warranty company, bit still worth checking how they deal with a failed unit.

The buy price IS very good, but I would think the build quality is poor.

Also worth bearing in mind that the C&E people are tightening up a lot of stuff from abroad in terms of getting back VAT, plus probably Import Duty at a buy price of £300 plus a post office collection fee which makes this significantly less attractive (I know from recent experience after buying stuff from Amazon.com and having to pay a VAT charge plus handling even after paying import duty deposit direct to Amazon when I bought the product)

I'd still stick to a brand I know at not that much more money.

How it looks is one thing, and to give credit where due, the plastics are pretty decent on these things; however the GUI software is far too complicated and fiddly for use on the road, and worse the audio could easily be very poor. Think FM bleed into the CD due to poor screening and layout, and alternator whine due to poor power supply eign. Finally when the back light packs up due to cheap capacitors then you shouldn't be surprised that the box of Chinese tat you bought actually contained Chinese tat.
