Just a quick query regarding headlights

My headlights are looking a bit tired now on my Rav. Can anyone recommend a headlight cleaner or any other method to get them looking half decent again

Turtle Wax do a headlight lens restorer kit, which contains all the necessary bits - and, importantly, a decent set of included instructions. I paid about €14 out here for it. Halfords will no doubt have it.

Maguiars do a kit as well.

Toothpaste can work as well, believe it or not. There are a few sites on the internerd that explain how to do it. I've done it on our RAV & it does work.

Toothpaste? Never heard off that. However if it does work I'll give it a go. I'll update on that over weekend.

How bad where your lights, was it the inside of the lens you did?

You can use ordinary medium cut polishing compound on headlights.. If I do a machine polish on a car I do the headlights and rear lights as well as they swirl just the same as car bodywork.. There really is no need for any special kits !!!

Agree, Charlie. T-Cut, or Mer, works pretty well too.

T cut has little bite or cut. Mer has almost none.. Farecla G3 is a very common polish that most bodyshops use as its an all in one polish and its cheap.. Just lube it well with plenty of water or the compound will dry out quickly and clog. This will mean it will not break down and actually polish..

Pop down to You local bodyshop and scrounge a wee drop ?

Quick update. Used a little toothpaste in a corner of the headlight and I must admit it did actually work.

Due to the rain coming down I was unable to finish but am definately going to finish it off tomorrow weather permitting of course

I'm hoping to get some before and after pictures if I get chance

I used cif cream cleaner to do mine.. and it left them smelling lemony fresh too! Any mild abrasive will do the trick.

I'm sure I read somewhere that cleaning with an abrasive takes off the protective coating, so once you've done it once you have to keep doing it regular.

That's true. In my experience about once a year does it. I think the coating is knackered once they start to go opaque though so if you don't do something, the light output eventually degrades to glow-worm level. It's Catch-22, I'm afraid.....
