Hi all,

Bit of a newbie here!!!. Have just bought my daughter a 1.0 1999 Yaris CDX. Got it home (private sale), pulled up on the drive & the Engine light came on. A friend has put it on his diagnostic machine & it has given the following:

Monday,13,February,2012,20:19:

33:51026

VCDS Release 11.11.2: Generic OBD2

Mode 03: Emission related fault codes

Address 10 (Engine): 1 Fault Found:

P0172 - Fuel Trim; Bank 1: System Too Rich

Any clues????

Hello mate, first check the air filter as it may be dirty if not then clean or get someone to remove and clean the MAF sensor next to the air box with electrical cleaner spray and report back.

EDIT. Disconnect the Battery ( you may need radio codes but not sure) or pull out the EFI fuse for a few minutes to clear the codes or use the reader.

Pete.

P0172. System too rich bank 1. Do not worry about the bank 1 part, you only have one cylinder block, it is not a V engine. Possible causes. 1 Intake blocked, dirty air filter, or possibly some physical obstructon. 2. EVAP canister purge valve not operating correctly. 3. Incorrect fuel pressure. 4 Fouled injectors. 5. EGR system faulty. 6 Oxygen sensor faulty, could be the heater or not switching correctly. I would go for 1. easy to check , then 5 EGR valve may faulty/need cleaning, 2. purge valve on the passenger side of the air filter can you hear it clicking at tickover? 6. Oxygen (lambda) sensor, needs special equipment to test. Hope this helps, always eliminate the easy things first.

Regards Geoff Peace.
