Camshaft Position Sensor "a" Circuit Problems

52 reg Avensis Verso 2.0 VVti. Engine fault code P0340. I've swapped the sensor for a new one but the light comes back on if starting the engine from cold so I suspect a wiring fault.

The wires disappear into the loom a few inches after the plug so could someone let me know where these wires go to so I can do a continuity test on them.

Am I right in thinking, as the light stays off if I reset the fault while the engine is warm then try to start it while the engine is still warm, that it is unlikely to be the PCM that's the problem?

wires go into main loom to ecm .

if you use volt meter set to ac with meter connected to terminals in sensor

sould see small voltage

if you have wiring diagram trace where they go into ecu you can tha check using volt meter on ohms setting

hi i think the wires trace back to the fuel injection driver in the engine bay and not the the main ecu ,i dont know if its any use but there are two sensors one for the crankshaft and one for the camshaft near the camshaft pulley might just be worth a look ,good luck

Obviously this is a petrol engine as its vvti ur wires will run back to ur ecm as petrol engines dont have an injector driver has anyone done anything recemtly under the bonnet (t chain)maybe. Have had a few bad pin connections at ecm causing this too

Since the light isn't coming on immediately and at every start up a continuity test will probably pass. Could be a loose connection but kit you have may not be sensitive enough to find (i.e. you might need an oscilloscope to see signal noise rather than just a circuit break).

The Cam sensor compares signal to the crank sensor so could also be an issue with that so an additional point to check.

As the engine is an older one could also be a worn chain (chain will stretch and since the crank compares to the cam it'll move the signals relatively and could cause an error)

Whole host of other things it could be too (VVT wearing or similar)

aye its a petrol , missed that bit , got d4d probs clouding my brain , a mate of mine had a prob with a vw turned out to be a scotchbloc when someone wired up a hands free set before he had it and eventually caused probs may be worth checking anything like this, you never know,
