Charliefarlies Guide To The Bsr System (Runflats )

Hi guys.

I've just had the bands cut out today on my BSR runflats and fitted new conventional tyres with standard valves,

My question is would a toyota dealer delete the tyre pressure warning light,(which I doubt),or does anyone know an indie garage in the lancashire area who could do it for me?

Thanks.

Have you read my PM I sent you, Paul? This covers your question re. TPMS sensors and their availability......from me.

Now you say you have actually had normal valves fitted.......have you read Charlie's thread re cutting the pink wire to cancel the light....?

But forgive my confusion......do you want a TPMS system or not....?

Got your PM thanks.
Having just spent £800 on tyres and derunflatting,(If thats a word)funds are a bit limited atm.
I'll probably get someone to do the pink wire fix,or get the light deleted.

Pink wire fix is a real piece of cake that anyone with even the most basic skills can do.. Im hopeless with wiring and the like but managed not only to do it but write up the wee guide... Cost for switching which is the best option IMHO is around three quid for the switch and an hour at most to do it,, Honestly it is really easy !

Just found this as a new addition to oxford dictionary

"derunflatting", an action required as a preventative measure to ensure you are not needlessly stranded, held captive by a monopoly (cartel) of garages holding specialist equipment that is few and far between, and may or may not actually be functioning.

The action of removing said runflats is frought with potential expense and hurdles, but for the brave the end result is worth it. 'Benefits include smoother ride, the ability to shop around and choose a tyre of your choosing'

Just taken the step of ordering 4 new tyres for mine - then its off to Mr T to do the needful and get rid of the run flats and ring. Think I'll keep the pressure system at the mo (unless Mr T changes the valves too).

Tell him you wish to retain the system prior to him breaking any of your sensors in this operation......if he does break any, and invokes the fifth amendment ,I have been trying to sell 3 for charity anyway......PM me.

Haha..It would never make the OED..Toyota would sue the ***** of them..

Managed to get my bands removed by a local indi tyre fitter for £200 all in.

Mr T wanted £450 for the same job..

TBH its not that a difficult a job, apart from the small matter of needing tyre fitters machinery haha.

You forgot to add without the bands you can have a puncture repaired at any tyre fitters..not the case with runflats.

Gentlemen.... ive been reading this thread with interest.

I've recently become the owner of a great T180, but have always had the nagging thought that the ride was extremely harsh ( i used to own aftermarket lowered cars) compared to other cars I've had.

So, the question is, does anyone know of a garage in South Wales that can remove these god foresaken p.o.s so i can get back to a nice driving experience ?

Otherwise i'm back to trawling the backstreets again..... :-)

The missus loves the way the car rides by the way !! I must be getting old , but i cant live with these.

PS, if the tpms valves are removed, and normal tyres fitted, does it still set off the light on the dash?? what function does it have?

Cheers

Gar :-)

Hi mate..TBH this excellent thread more or less covers it all.
But just to give my twopenrth.
Just bought a T180 also..after a quote of £1150 from MrT to replace all four tyres with the standard BSR tyres I had the bands removed and standard tyres fitted by my local 'friendly' tyre fitter..any decent indi tyre fiter should be able to do it.
Its half a days work and a job you could do yourself IF you had the tools.
Should cost you around £200-300 plus tyres of course.
The only problem really could be getting the pressure sensors off,one of mine was badly siezed and had to be sawn off from the inside of the rim,as it wasnt giving a pressure reading at the gauge.apart from that no probs..
If you want to keep/replace any knackered pressure sensors Big Kev on here has three for sale at a great price.
IIRC Charlie? has a guide on band removal with pics on this thread.
If your sensors are trashed then obviously your pressure warning light will be permanently lit.
NB the original BSR tyre valve dust caps have a tiny allen key screw you have to loosen to get them off,but they will probably be seized up meaning you have to break the valve to get them off.

And I also informed my insurers of the change..theres no extra charge.

The flashing light will come on - maybe after several weeks but be sure, like Liam Neeson, it will come.

The instructions to disable it are pinned. If you want a another comparison between RFTs and conventionals, ask Big Kev.

You need to find a small indi tyre fitter for this job (took around 4hrs incl tyre fitting)..the larger nationwide firms probably wont/cant do it ?.It wouldnt be cost effective for them anyway..

Once you know how its done though its a fairly easy job for a half decent TF..

I have seen a guide on how its done somewhere on here, but cant find it now I'm afraid

Only one of 6 dealers within 25mls of me had the machine to remove the bands @ £450 just to remove them and go to standard,or £1125 including tyres,(a days labour)..tbf I didnt ask what tyres they were.

I was also told that as BSRs are now obsolete the few dealers who do have the band removal machine wont be rushing to repair it when it breaks down.

No harm in trying to find one though, but be quick..good luck.

I paid £825.00 for....removal of tyres and runflat rings, and supply and fit of 5 Yokohama Advan ST80 tyres which were superb.

I was given, totally unsolicited, two bills totalling the above amount......one was for £80.00 towards the use of the special, masonic, secret, cartelled and price fixing, sometimes actually working, Runflat Removal Machine.

In other words, my local dealer was still trying to prove he was using that machine and contributing to its overheads.......PISH.

You got a great deal there Kev. how long ago was that?

I suppose dealers can charge whatever they like..I was told the 'mystery' machine originally cost the dealer £20k to buy,and my local MrT did have one but it needed a £5k part to repair, which they wouldnt be doing,as BSRs are now obsolete.

You'll just have to ring around guys.

Hope you get fixed up.

In addition to my furthermoreness, and to answer Gar the OP.......YES......you can indeed retain the TPMS with normal tyres fitted, and it seems like a good idea....I did it, to start with.......then I stupidly got a spare wheel and tyre with a Pressure Monitor signed into the ECU of my car. Why is that stupid, I even here shcm ask......? Because every time I did a journey WITHOUT the spare on board, just local stuff, the bloody light came on.....and guess who the only wan is that can cancel same......and charge merrily for said service.....? Pink wire snipped and switched by Anchorman.

A wee drawback I have read on here more than once is that the TPMS is actually far from fast to react to a decrease in pressure, but I just fancied it still being there......nothing at all to do with the fact I have 3 brand new sensors for Charity Sale ye unnerstaun.

RIDE QUALITY......I cannot honestly remember my exact posting, but YES......ride quality does improve, and a decrease in roadnoise (but that may be attributed to my change of tyres?)......the ride quality improves, not drastically as some may say, but noticably. The main attribute I found was in driving here in pothole city and traffic calming concrete madness estate where I live.

With the rings in place, one tended to cough up ones piles (can't spell haemorrhoids....) on hitting even minor potholes, but the sleeping polismen were just shocking......the improvement over these calming measures was incredibly better.

Gar of Greenshire.........go pick yer tyres and show your local Mr.T your quote.......pound to a pinch of sewage he will match or be darn close.....get 5 tyres from him, and a spare wheel aff eBay. Now you can only hope his "special" removal machine isnae gubbered.

Lovely momo car by the way, and welcome t'club.

Big Kev

I did exactly what you suggest Kev..
Gave MrT my 40% lower quote from my local tyre fitter, but they wouldnt budge.Still wanted £105 a corner just to remove the bands..but some dealers may match them.
I got the impression they didnt particularly want to do it,but I could be wrong.
Just one word to the wise Gar..if you do manage to get an indi TF to do the job make sure they give the edge of the wheel rims a really good rub down to get rid of all the gunk that accumulates over time,so the new tyres fit nice and tight on the rim.

Ouch ! Just got mine done today - BSR's removed, new tyres I supplied fitted, pressure sensors all still working for £80+VAT from Mr T in Inverness. Noticeably better road manners on the ride home - well chuffed.

So........£24.00 a corner then Craigy, incl. VAT.....? Zatnot a wee misprint......? Or £80.00 a corner.....£96.00 incl VAT....?

£96 inc VAT for all 4 BSR's removed and new Hankook Ventus ST RH06's put on. Bargain.

I forsee see a lot of RAV4 T180s and SR 180s being parked outside B&Bs in the Inverness area at that price. Great place for a holiday too.

Is that £96 per corner?,or for all four? Ha.

For all four its the bargain of the century, especially as you provided your own tyres.

How long did it take them ? I was told by the only Mr T in the area with the magic machine it was a full days work.
