Hard To Start/cutting Out

I'll start with an apology,i'm sure these topics have been covered before but i find the search feature makes it really hard to find anything because of the view it gives you(i'm sure it wasn't like that before) anyway............

When i start my car in the morning it will never start straight away,i have to turn it over for about 15 seconds stop and then repeat the procedure again then it normaly starts within a few seconds,it's like the diesel isn't getting to the injectors and needs to pump up to them, sometimes when warm it starts after a second or two but mostly instantly

the other problem is it will cut out in traffic,it starts but i need to rev it hard to stop it stalling again,a bit awkward as i drive a taxi.

the glow plugs are fine(new, but the old ones were fine too),in fact it was -6 the other day and it started the same as normal and it will always start, never let me down but can't be good for the starter motor

the EGR valve seemed the way to go for the stalling and i removed it and cleaned it and the manifold out(again) and although it is better it still does it

any ideas please,cheers

ps it has done 145000miles

I think from What uv said it's quite possible your EGR valve is sticking! Seen a few do this.

I'd go for an air leak in your fuel line somewhere, have you had it serviced lately, i did my fuel filter recently and it gave a similar problem ie it wouldnt start after about 10-15 second turning over, a short pause then turn again and it started, it just needed another 1/4 of a turn to seal it correctly. Check the priming pump on top of the fuel filter housing, it should be difficult to push down, if easy then there's air in your fuel system(low pressure side)
