The lock striker bracket on the body Shell may need re-setting. This will hold the tailgate closer to the Shell and prevent it knocking.

Good question, I was about to start a similar topic. In the escort I had previously, the solution was to turn rubber 'stoppers' so that the boot lid didn't rattle in the lock. I was hoping for something similar here too, but no, the rubber stoppers are fixed, so I'll ask my local Mr T to see how much they are

I went through the same process as you too

I'll see if it works

I posted about this when I first got my Avensis in jan.

There are 2 torx screws that hold the steel 'hoop' to the car - the part that the boot catch latches on to.

On my car the screws were loose and this meant that the boot lid could move up and down ~ 5mm enough to bang while driving. I tapped this assembly down firmly with rubber mallet and then tighened.

Easy to confirm by going outside parked car and bouncing the car a little via the boot lid - it is very obvious if there is movement!

Good luck

Tim
