Where To Put The Scangauge

Hey Davey, no probs :)

I ordered one of the bluetooth OBD dongles that you have - intrigued by that and even if I don't use it on the RAV, can use it on the other car and as a portable reader as well.

One thing I am not that keen on however is the way it seems to be so exposed when plugged in (as you have said already) so I also ordered a ODB splitter, which will allow the dongle to be tucked out the way as well as allowing two devices to be connected if wanted. I'll let you know how that works once it arrives from Hong Kong!

Thats a good idea. Please post a pic and a quick review when it turns up.

Although I'm used to mine being there now and hardly ever catch it lately, it wouldn't hurt to move it out of the way a bit as the wife has complained that it has 'fallen out' of the OBD port after she has used the car, but it is solid in there, so I think she may be catching it with her foot and not owning up to it

On my Qashqai, the OBD was in a near identical position to the Auris and the RAV, but behind a little flap (very neat actually) and when I plugged in the Scangauge connector, the flap would not close, so it was a very simple matter of just pressing in the couple of retaining lugs and pushing it backwards which then let me close the flap with plug in place. It would not surprise me if there was a single or just a couple of suppliers of this standardised connector so with same basic lugs and maybe you could do something similar to move yours back out the way a bit (or even relocate totally out the way?)

  • 4 weeks later...

I really liked the look of the App daveyonthemove used with a bluetooth enabled EOBD Reader, but I have of course got the scangauge already!

Solution? get a EODB Y-Cable

Fitted this today and tested the Scangauge II on it - seemed to take a little longer to complete connection. The Y-Cable plug is also a bit bulky, but it was a simple job to relocate the original OEDB socket and in it's position place one of the 2 new outputs.

The 2nd connector was used for the bluetooth EOBD Reader and the reader itself neatly tucked away out the way (pics will follow later).

For the cost of these devices now, must be worth getting for anyone with a EOBD enabled vehicle!!

I didn't take a picture of the Y-Cable before I fitted it, but you should be able to see from the next pics what it is like. It is a pretty heavy duty lump and very solid!

Ok.

This is an overall shot of the install on the RAV4.3....

Top to Bottom:

the RED circle is where the EOBD socket lives by default - This pic shows the Scangauge plug into one of the extension sockets using the same position. It does not clip into place like the original one, but is still quite neat and is actually now set further back.

EOBD-Y-1.jpg

The BLUE circle is where the Y-Cable splits into two and the white connection above the black EOBD plug is the original socket (see pic below)

The GREEN circle is the 2nd Extension socket, plugged into the bluetooth EOBD Reader. The reader is a perfect fit to slide into a empty slot below a bunch of wiring connectors - it could virtually be made for it! Below is a close up wth the the blue pen showing the connection point and the BT Reader

And Finally .... All put back together ....

So that is the wiring.

In use, the Scangauge and the App (I tried Torque Lite so far) work fine, co-existing together. Exactly what I will use the S/W App for I really don;t know, but I think it should be possible to connect the BT EOBD reader to a PC and instead of just being able to view Point in Time data, be able to record instead and review parameters over time, and with the Scangauge in place, can still keep the standard viewing as well.

For an overall cost of about £22, including the Y-Cable and the paid-up version of Torque, pretty happy what I ended up with

Looks like a tidy finish, I may have a look for one and relocate my OBD reader.

I know what you mean about the value of the app and the reader, its fantastic for the money.

You could hard wire them in, just solder extra wires to the back of the ODB port, I think only 4 wires are used anyway, or does this Y cable have some switching circuitry?

you probably could, but for the sake of about £5, is it worth the hassle?

I wouldn't go to that much effort as I would like to take it out and plug it into any future cars.
