A week into my ownership of an Auris SR180..I'm already questioning my decision...having read the "figures", I thought they looked great and liked the look of the car and here I am. Is it me or the car ? With the lightest of boots and the most economical driving I can possibly manage,I'm getting 36mpg.....my other half has a Clio Sport which gets better mpg....love the looks but totally not convinced by economy. Is it possible there's something wrong with it or is that normal ?

Welcome to TOC

I will move your question to the Auris forum where hopefully you should get some answers

Hello and welcome!

What type of journeys are you using the car for?

Is the mpg you're quoting from the trip computer or manually calculated?

Sometimes the trip computer isn't very accurate, and can under or over read.

I predominantly use my car for short journeys of under 15-20 miles, and get a manually calculated average of 35mpg. My trip computer regularly states around 32mpg.

Looking at the this forum, the avensis and rav 4 forums, I am happy with the figures im getting as they seem average. There are however one or two lucky ones who get excellent economy from the 2.2 180 (you know who you are!). The general consensus on these forums does appear to be that the 2.2 180 isn't the most economical! What car did you used to drive?

Sorry it's early in the morning and I'm not making much sense!

I meant, after reading the experiences of many auris, avensis and rav4 owners with regards to fuel economy and the 2.2 180 engine, i am content with what I'm getting.

Thanks for your reply..I had a Laguna 1.9dci before and on paper the Auris figures are very similar. My journey to work is 25 miles each way mostly on country roads.Laguna was returning 45 mpg and that was with me never thinking about driving economically.

was it the 1.9dCi 120?

I used to have a Megane II 1.9dCi 120, it averaged 42mpg (again manually calculated) in it's 130,000/6 year lifetime with me. The official combined was 52 if i remember correctly.

I'd probably try a brim to brim manual mpg calculation to make sure your trip computer is accurate.

You will find that the SR180/T180 has a rather average economy return, some on here would argue it may be the EGR valve needing a clean, or the fact that your car has a problem.

Well, I averaged 38MPG over the entire ownership of the car (T180) and I was happy with that and I can say that I was one of the higher achiever of MPG on these forums, not unusual to hear 30-32MPG for these cars.

What is the bottom line? The 2.2 in these cars are thirsty and not helped by the use of DPF, and you may indeed benefit from an EGR clean out. But in my honest opinion, I did this to mine and found no difference.

You will probably see improvements over time as you get use to the car and how to drive it better, but do NOT expect to see the quoted 45mpg average as advertised. I have not managed this figure EVER, even in a pure motorway run over a tankful, it is the nature of the beast i am afraid.

Good luck.
