Brake Discs

As the winter is now almost over (I hope) and the iQ I bought to see me through the winter months as my rear wheel drive cars were parked up in the garage to keep them off the salt covered roads, the time has come to sell my iQ. Well at least that was the plan....

However as I've always liked little cars and had things like Smart cars in the past I have decided to keep the iQ and start "pimping" it up.

So the first plan of attack is to change the springs and lower the suspension, plenty of options here so no problem, I will also change the wheels and put 17" wheels on it, again plenty of options so no problem. The issue I have is that I want to change the discs to grooved and drilled ones but I only seem to be able to find rear ones to this spec. Are there any other Toyota ones which fit the iQ such as the Aygo or Yaris? There are plenty listed on various websites but they all seem to be slightly different, has anybody fitted alternative discs to their cars??

I know the guys over at R1concepts are working on front disks for the iQ.

They are in production now and should be available on their website soon. R1 Concepts.

I take it you are only fitting them for cosmetic reasons since the solid brakes work very well,

perform well to match the performance of the iQ,

and suit the electrics as fitted VSC+, ABS, EBD, BA & do not overheat.

It looks like you will need to go to a specialist and have grooves or holes put into your discs.

(there are motorsport specialists that can and will do that for you, you just need to splash the cash)

The difference will surely only be cosmetic, since you can only stop as quick as you need to stop, the grooves or holes will not reduce that stopping distance in normal road use.

(try the vehicle on a brake tester and you will see how little the rear discs contribute to the braking of an iQ, as they do with so many light cars, imagine like on a push bike where the rear brakes are just stopping you going over the handlebars, the front brakes do the majority of the braking)

For improved braking with an iQ with improved performance for use/wet or track use, there are a choice of pads available.

Interesting George

And to back up what you say, as you may know i have fitted TPMS which also monitor tyre/ wheel temperature and whilst the fronts are averaging 26deg the rear are around 11deg

George you are correct, it's purely cosmetic and no other reason what so ever. When you put bigger wheels on a car where you can see more of the discs, I think it looks better if the disc has more to it than being just a solid flat disc. I've done this on one of my other cars, here's my MX5.

Thanks, I'd already seem those ones for the rear, it was the front ones I was trying to find, it may have to be a custom job as suggested.

Get yourself a standard set of discs and take them into an engineering place. It's not rocket science.

Have a look at the MTEC black addition! They look great tbh... Its what I've got on both my cars. Black diamond are another very good disc set up. Ferodo pads is what I'd have over my Mintex that I'm running...

Just a word of warning about drilled discs.

They can be prone to cracking on a road car around the holes. Thing is they can get hot then cooled pretty quickly by rain or puddles and microscopic cracks can start to form around the holes. Doesn't happen to every drilled discs and I have drilled discs on my Cobra but I do keep a close eye on them.

If you have a choice I'd go for grooved or dimpled Discs for a road car.

Don't forget to spray paint the edges and centres before fitting too, keep them looking good for a while. :)

Craig.

I wouldn't worry about the cracking on the little iQ. If you're driving it that hard I'd be more worried about killing myself first.

  • 4 months later...

If better brakes are needed, what about replacing the rubber brake lines with some stainless steel brake lines front and rear?

Has anyone tried going to S.S. brake lines?

I have done quite a few brake upgrades, when going to a brake pads, for the street harder pads usually wear Disc rotors out faster and dont stop much better, organic/stock are usually the best for the street.

Toyota designed and built a vehicle that meets all the requirements to carry 4 people and steer and stop safely, so if you want to modify or improve on that, best first check that everything is working and performing as designed, & then if going to alter (or improve on that) that, you take full responsibility for any consequenses.

Steel Braided Brake pipes have their place & are fine, but if the standard pipes are not doing their job on 'the street', its maybe worth finding out why.

If they are just for Bling, then thats great as long as they meet the Standard and use that is expected of them.

The thing to think about with such a small light car on the public road is that its easy to improve or upgrade brakes, but over do it and lock those brakes which is easy to do,

then you are not stopping as in the tyres have lost traction, locked tyres are just sliding over the surface of the road, and not stopping you.

Up-grades need done as a whole, better brakes need better tyres mostly, and you will see that the iQ brakes as standard should stop the car in a safe distance in a safe manner, if its wet or low traction its your safe driving speed that ensures you can stop, locked up brakes do not.

If you are using it in motorsport and have overheating problems with your brakes then braded hoses and upgraded pads will probably also go with quality brake fluid and maybe also upgraded calipers.

Very different from the needs of UK roads with a National speed limit of 60 or 70 mph.

Performance pads often will not work better than standard when cold, and wet weather ones will not last as long as standard, but thats usually expected and taken into account.

*Brake pads & even brake discs are considered as consumables when it comes to the need to stop and brake safely*

The iQ standard brakes when properly serviced do exactly as they should which is stop the car with all the additional help of ABS,EBD,& BA, then there is the VSC+ to think of unless you have it switched off.

If you need Braided Brake lines David will make you Quality ones to your exact requirements for the same price as some Unknown quality you might find on the net.

Why do you think that covering a standard rubber high pressure hose with braided stainless steel will improve your brakes?

If you were just covering Standard high pressure rubber brake hoses with shiny chrome covers like from your shower, then it probably would do nothing,

as it is on a standard system the 'proper job' will do nothing either.

I dont think that was the suggestion to just cover standard hoses!

Not that standard hoses in good condition are liable to bulge or get damaged with a standard iQ servo or used for road use.

Is it possible that your car break pads can wear down by 50% in 3 months when just doing town driving?
