Flasher Unit

Now the weather is warming up a bit now i am going to start on a few projects on the car,but one for increasing the audible buzzer is giving me a problem.

i was going to wire in a louder buzzer to the wiring to the indicator lamps but decided to fit a chime type as someone else suggested, but a chime type will not work using this method as it needs longer time to operate than just a buzzer. my idea is to take the the live feed directly off the feed to flasher unit. the other wires from from the flaher (left flasher and right flasher switching wires are earth wires. this method will operate the chimer ok.

but having located the flasher behind the dash i cant work out how it unclips.i can see a clip at the base of the mounting but not sure how it operates,up,down or pushed in. i dont want to force anything untill i am sure of the correct method.

the flasher unit is mounted on a projection off an aluminium bracket that carries a large wiring harness, held in place by a fixed tie wrap ive tried removing the nut holding the bracket but still cant move the bracket..

I know the average owner will not be able to advise me but ive seen qualified Toyota technician posting on here whom i sure have experiance of removing this flaher unit on Auris. many times.their advice would be gratefully recieved.

If and when ive completed the project i will post some pics for others who may wish to improve the audible warning for their flahers.

Hi Pajjy,i was the one who mentioned about a chime type audio flasher warning.

i got one off an hyundai at a breakers yard for £5 including a pair of horns (another project to do)

Have not as yet fitted the Chime but when last weighing up the job i could see that the flasher relay is a bugger to get at as it can only be reached with about two fingers. i suspect it maybe slid into its holder.but how is it unclipped?

the wiring to it comes at the back of it,so is not a plug in connection as many other are.

once it is removed from the bracket there is ample lengh of its harness to swing it foreward giving more room to carry out any work on its wiring.

As you have said the trafficator arm switches the earth (-) to operate the system.

I printed off the wiring diagram from toyota Tec site for guidence.

i hope someone can advise how to remove relay.

If i can find a mirror small enough i will whip out the display panel and try and get a view of the rear of the relay, this may give me a clue to how its held on the bracket.

Have found a small mirror in one of the wifes many, many handbags.

using this mirror i managed to get a view of the rear of the flasher relay.

Its amost square in shape, but what cannot be seen without the aide of the mirror is a Blue plug connector at the rear of it for the wiring. i manage to get a finger nail onto this plug retaining clip on one side but no way on the other one never mind trying to pull the plug clear of its holder at the same time.It does not not help having pork sausages for fingers.

The pic appears to show plent of room but infact there is very little

This morning managed to disconnect the flasher unit from platic arm.this extension arm whch extends from the harness holder which is the large white thing with the bundle of wires at one end. it is plastic and not aluminium as PAJJY thought.

At the bottom of the flasher, which cant be seen in the pic i posted,is small gap between ithe flasher and the holder. after trying with different screwdrivers , hacksaw blades and the such i manage to free the clip.

The wiring harness coming from the flasher unit is a lot shorter than i had hoped,so conncting up wires to to feed the chimer is not going to be easy. as ive said there only room for one hand.

i wont be progressing any further for a few days. Had not meant to even start on this for a few more weeks,But after PAJJY's post i thought i have a quick look at the job.

I will just leave the car as it is with tools, mirror, torch etc laying on the passeger seat,it in the garage and i have the wifes car as back up transport.

Hi Acetip, well done in removing the flasher unit, what tool did you use in the end to operate the clip please.

After looking at the small area to work with to add any wiring i am wondering if it would be possible to pick up the the wires where they enter the steering column.

Yes i meant plastic not aluminium for the bracket.

I used an small electricians screwdriver under the flasher units clip, well actualy on top of the clip, just prodded around with it and it releasd the unit.

Have thought about picking up the wiring were it enters the steering column but dont fancy removing the lower dash trim though.

Thinking of wiring up the speed sensor to the radio whilst the instrument panels out so the volume self adjusts to car speed.

Wife asks why when i get a new car i always start fiddling about with it.

Thats a good question.

There's no need imo, to remove the flasher unit in order to connect the buzzer; simplier way is connecting it to clock harness, tapping it's wires like in this diagram. The diodes are necesary in order to avoid left and right signals to not interfere one each other.

Thanks Tavy. i already have a buzzer that i wired into the idicator lights.

But want to change it to a chime type, but this wont work off the buzzer wiring (ive alredy fitted the diodes with the buzzer) cos a chime needs a constant feed.to operate.it chimes at its own built in chimeing speed, that is not the same as the flasher rate.

The trafficator arm when operated gives an earth connection to the flasher unit. the live feed to the unit is constant when ignition is on.

so i need to pick up both left and right (using diodes) earth feed from somewhere between traficator to flasher unit.

while ive got things stripped out will use your excellent postiing to wire up the radio/cd player for auto volume control. found up a pin that i think will fit in the n the the radio connector.

Thanks again.

You're welcome .

In this case connect buzzer to a constant or acc (ignition) plus, and buzzer minus , thru the same 2 pcs. 1N diodes , to trafficator connector; that is a 20 pins connector, white, and the wires we need are situated at no. 5 and 6 (green and light green wires).

The light green and dark green are the ones i am going to try and connect to on the flasher unit.are you saying i can find another place to find a connectionfor these wires.tried tracing flasher unit harnss but its goes into another harness.

but as its awkward working in the cofined area i am going to pick up the + feed else where.

Yeap, the stalk's connector must be more accessible than relay's connector...

Have you any idea of the best way to get to it. Tavy

Theoretically...practically I never removed Auris' steering column covers .

Ive been out to the garage and had a quick look and the cover is in two haves and splits at the two stakes, think the top one is fixed somehow and the bottom one clips to it.

Cant se any screws that secure them as ive come across on some other cars.

Thank once again Tavy

Will post when ive got the job sorted, which will have to wait for a while yet.

You can see in the middle of this link, how steering column covers could be removed; text may be translated with google (it'll be pretty well understandable) but pcs. are very suggestive.

For anyone interested in fitting a louder buzzer or chime here is the wiring diagram.

If anyone is interested in upgrading their indicator buzzer to a chime, if they do a search on eBay for chimer buzzer there are three Hyundai ones on there

the cheapest is £12 complete, the other two seem to be missing the cable plug in and cost almost double of the first one. These cost about £80 new.

IMG_0664.jpg Chimer is now fitted, sorry about duplicate pics but photobucket was playing up.

I started by first remving the upper and lower panels as shown on Tavys posting.the first removed was the lower panel by removing 2 screws then unclipping the panels clips.

the lower panel holds the airbag and beside the many clips there are 4 bolts holding it in place,a 10mm socket with an extension is needed to reach these bolts and you reach them through a small gap between the 2 panels.

i followed the instructions for removing the lower cowl on the steering and pressed each side of the lower cowl with palms of the hands and the clips released but the instructions say to reach up inside the cowl to release another clip, try as i may i could not locate this clip which seems fairly large in Tavys instruction.

I tried for ages to find this clip but gave up and went to my Toyota dealers an cornered one of the technicions and explained to him the problem. he said its only a small clip and you can pull it free.

So i said please show me,which he did,he just gave the cowl a sharp pul and it came free.the top cowl came away easy then

i mounted the the chime behind lower panel and wired the pos feed from the the chime headlap leveler. the neg (earth) i wired to the multi plug of the trafficator arm.i wanted to use butt connectors but the is not much room for crimping tool so i i used screw type connectores.

The wire for the left flashers is a light green and the right is a darker green, but there 2 dark green wires after testing i found the one next to the light green wire is the correct one.

all works fine now, better than the buzzer i fitted before, which i have now removed.

Whilst at it ive done the ASL radio mod.and programmed it in by moving the car.but have not road tested it yet.

You can see the cips that hold the cowls together in the pics and they are little bigger than matchsticks. if you brought a toy from Poundland the quality would be far superior than what Toyota have produced here.

Must thank Tavy once more for his help cos without it i dont think i would have attempted the job.

I forgot to mention that the way i wired the chime it does not work when using the hazard function as the wiring for that is independent that is the earthing for switching on. Thats no problem as it does not realy need to. after all who has ever used one for real. not many i should think.
