Mmt To Manual

Hi Folks

We have a Yaris 1.0 (2004) with an MMT gearbox which for the last twelve months has been nothing but a pain. The cost of replacing the ECU and everything else that goes with it exceeds the cars value and it isn't guaranteed not to recur. I have heard that conversion to a manual (reconditioned gearbox) is possible and may be cost effective so can anyone shed any light on this with regards to feasibility, cost and most importantly someone who can do the job f it is possible.

We've had this car from new and it is bitterly disappointing to experience this from a company renowned for reliability which is one of the reasons we bought it in the first place. After only seven years it may have to be scrapped.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Its a truly horrid gearbox the MMT,really poorly designed. and expensive to run, we had to get our car towed to toyota to have it all reset after a new clutch, you shouldnt have to do that really.

Yeah, it's not a great box to say the least. I don't know if it is possible to retrofit a 'proper' gearbox into it, but I suspect it would be quite difficult and/or prohibitively expensive...!

Can't you just part-ex it for a manual one?

1.0 manual Yarisususues are quite plentiful and pretty cheap; Certainly cheaper than retrofitting the gearbox I suspect... (It's certainly more economically viable than my quest to part-ex my 3-door Mk1 D4D for a 5-door D4D Mk1! The #@£&%$ things are still insanely expensive!)

Yeah, .. (It's certainly more economically viable than my quest to part-ex my 3-door Mk1 D4D for a 5-door D4D Mk1! The #@£&%$ things are still insanely expensive!)

I briefly thought of the logistics to change an MMT box... I suspect you would need major electronic work which would make the mechanical side look like a walk in the park.. I cannot see the bill for Labour being under £2k - assuming you could find a competent garage to do it..

Agree a trade in is the best deal..

(D4D 5 door prices are GREAT.. long may it continue.. I've owned mine for 7 years now: annual depreciation is around £400..)

Nothing lasts forever! You have to expect problems with an 8 year old car. Or anything else for that matter.

Clearly the comment of someone who doesn't understand how the MMT box works. This needs to be done to enable the car to function correctly with the new clutch as it'll have a completely different bite point to the previous clutch.

Well to be honest if maintained any car should last I excess of 8 years without any major issues.

Well guys.

I think that i am the first for this convert.

I have a 1.4 d4d Yaris 2006 mmt. Now it has manual gear box.

Did you do the conversion yourself?  If so, it would be interesting to see some progress pics.  We did it on our Corrado (auto to manual) about 12 years ago.  Not too difficult but then again it is a 1994 car with 1994 technology!
