Engine Management Light Avensis 2001, 1.8 Petrol

My engine management light came on last night after a short 5 mile journey. The car I just bought is a Toyota Avensis 2001, Vermount 1.8 petrol with 88,000 miles on the clock in good condition. It has been fully serviced in late january, 2012. All filters were changed then.

I recently had the gearbox oil changed at at Toyota on Monday. Will this cause the Engine Management light to come on on Wednesday?

I have checked the service history and the CAT was changed in January 2012 and and the Lamda Sensor was replaced last August, 2011.

I have searched the threads here and followed the tip and unplugged the Battery for 5mins. The warning light has gone off for now. If it comes back I will take it to an independent garage for a code check. Is there anything else I can do? I have a feeling it is the O2 sensor but I am not sure.

Many thanks for any advice.

I had similar on my last Avensis (2000 1.8vvti) after a local independent service. Paid them for Cat then 2 sensors and still EML came on. I got partial refund via Barclaycard (long story)

Anyway I bought an Autel Multiscan OBD2 reader - great little tool. Gives you any code faults then you can search for cures. It can clear the codes also. Just letting you know this will probably be cheaper than a garage code read. Mine was about £25 new on eBay.

If you were closer you could have a loan of it B)

Hi Jim,

Thanks very much for the tip. I will definitely get one of those code readers of eBay.

Since I unplugged the Battery for 10mins the light has not come on again and the car is driving fine.

I think Toyota must have caused it to come on some how.

I get the feeling the previous owner was over charged for repairs since if the light kept coming on garages are only too happy to do an expensive repair.

Cheers,

John
