Problem With Corolla Engine Braking

Firebreather

Whenever I first start the car and the engine is cold, and going about 25 mph on 2nd, if I stop accelerating the car jerks quite violently back and forward as the engine is braking, but once the car is warmed up, the the engine's braking is nice a smooth, can anyone tell me what is wrong?

thanks!

It's just the loosey-goosey transmission.... the manual transmission is one of the least precision engineered parts of our Corollas. Funny thing is, my '64 Rambler has a tighter, quieter transmission (less gear whine) than my Corolla. The advantage is the transmissions last near forever...

This is a common problem. I don't know if its only Toyota or other manufacturers too. I got the same irritating thing on my new Corolla -03.

But when the engine is cold i rarely use the engine for breaking... just press down the clutch instead and use your ordinary breaks, that do the trick

I know, but when u live in a large housing estate with lots of bends, u tend to drive in 2nd gear at about 25mph, and at a bend u just let go of the accelerator, and the jerks starts!

Or in another case if i am in 2nd, and going over a ramp, i just let go off the accelerator, then again it jerks when cold.... only way around this is to coast with the clutch which is very very annoying..... :ffs:

I have been in my friends ford focus, and its certainly not like this!!!

Seems like Rollas have had this problem for years. My '87 AE92 hates trafic jams.

When I am rolling along in 1st without using the accelarator in a jam all of a sudden the car starts to kangaroo along. I have to drop the clutch to sort the problem. !Removed! anoying and knackering on the old clutch leg as I spend at least an hour a day in jams.

I thought this was normal that in the lowest gear the driveshaft would kill the petrol engine (the process strarts with vibration until the engine stops) if you do not press the accelerator or release the clutch a little! Only diesel engines would allow you to run in 1st without accelerator...

It's wierd though, coz sometimes it doesn't do it at all!!!

Well if I go at just the right speed and the car is warm, on either 1st or 2nd, its perfectly fine, but 9/10 times i cant go at "just the right speed" because of the road conditions...

But its nothing unsual about this, is it? You cant travel too slow with gear engaged and no thrust because then the engine will die because of too low revs. That depends on how your gearbox and gear-ratios is set. Sometimes you have to use the cluth. Otherwise you could buy an automatic instead :D

yes i know that, but i think ur not understanding me, if I travel at say 25-30 in 2nd gear (that is no where near too low), and release the accelerator when cold, it knocks back and forward quite violently...until i use the clutch, from experience in my car below 5-10mph is too low for 2nd and as u describe the revs are low, but that is perfectly normal as you said....

Ok, you could change the sparkplugs if they are old. And also the ignition-wires. But first go for the sparkplugs, they could at least make your car a bit more calm.

Well I give my car for a regular 9000 mile service, so I assume they are fine...although I will change them and see if there is any difference. Could you tell me how to change em?
