Missing Key?

I've currently got an Auris with the keyless ignition. One minor problem - I seem to have lost the key. The strange thing is the car is still working fine - engine starts, car goes, engine stops, etc - and has been doing so for several days. Obviously I've not been able to lock the doors, but the rest is fine.

My question is is this expected? Ie could the key be happily lying in a ditch somewhere where I'll never be able to find it again? Or does this mean the key is hiding somewhere in the car?

For the car to start / stop the key must be inside the car, a buzzer and warning sign will flash if you try and take the key outside the car with the ignition on.

What happens when you use the spare to lock the car? if I remember it will not let you if another key is in range and it comes up with a warning on the display.

Time to look under the seats.

If the keys are inside the car somewhere and you try and lock the doors, you should get a beep. If this is the case I'd start looking around in the car!

Unfortunately it was a hire car, so I didn't have access to the spare. I did have a really good look, but couldn't find the key. I'm wondering if it's possible (if a bit dim) to program the car to not require a key. But it's out of my hands now - I shall no doubt discover the expensive way if the hire car company can't manage it.

It's a pity my Auris experience was soured by this - having a hole you put the key in to make the car go means there's no opportunity to lose it in the same way.

(and a hybrid probably isn't the right choice for mountain roads and long distances - a diesel would have been less thirsty. I liked the Yaris diesel I had last year for the same trip...)

If the car starts normally the key MUST be in the car.

or is the key in your jacket all the time, or briefcase or similar?

I have my key in my jacket and I dont ever use the key as the car unlocks when I approach and start using the start button. I think its a great system
