Pls. Advise - Rav4 Engine Problem...

Hy!

I don't spend your time.

Facts:

1) New Rav4 2008 2.2 diesel manual transmision.

2) 0-30000km loose all oil. Go to Toyota service, complete oil level, open a oil consumtion oil document at service

3) 30000-45000km loose 1,5 l of oil. The car have the last 2 months warranty (3 years)

4) On 52000km, Toyota service promise me to change the engine; but they are make some repairs to engine (change some pistones, segments,etc)

5) On71800km, crankshaft is broken. The car are on the road but, have some noises. Toyota service diagn - the crankshaft is bronken at first piston in the middle (near to oil chanel). The rest in the engine are Ok, nothing broken.

Questions:

1) what can I do?

2) it is normaly to have a crankenshaft broken on 72000km?

2) it is possible to use AD Head Gasket document?

3) it is better to change the engine?

The official answer from Toyota dealer is:

- Dear customer, we can't help you because: first - you are out of warranty; second and the rest motives are not important. Pay 5000euro to fix your car and you receive 3 months for labor and 1 year for parts.

In this conditions I ask if it is normal to invest 5000euro for 3 months warranty or not? Maybe is OK to sell at loss and finish the business with Toyota (I have a big disappointment at this moment)

Hi Dr Lupo and welcome to the club.

You need to write to Toyota in your country and explain the situation.

Replacement engines are available but your dealer chose to work on the engine which is against the rules. The crankshafts never break and I suggest that it has been starved of oil. If the bearings are fitted incorrectly no oil can get through and it will cause crankshaft failure at that point.

Can you give more details of where it was broken or better still photo's?

In the UK the warranty has been extended to 5 years or 112K miles I belive, what country are you in?

Sounds like you have already had new pistons fitted etc?

Now the crankshaft has gone?

Sounds like the repair was not successful, but no idea how this warranty works in your country. It should be the same world wide?

But I certainly would be very interested to know :D

In genral I thik warranty for a product is the same for all world; but no in Romania (my country). Like I say before - Toyota dealers fitted the new pistons and now I have the crankenshaft broken. Why they change my pistons and not change the engine - because I have 2 more months to expire my warranty ..And now, Toyota service open again my engine because forgot to put on the new crankenshaft a senzor...so, I must wait another 2 weeks to order new parts, etc.. Toyota are not professionals in my opinion

About 5 years warranty - here in Romania after 3 years, I receive one offer fron Toyota dealer- pay another 500euro for extend warranty for 5 years; but we talk about Toyota, not Dacia Renault (made in Romania), so I refuse to pay.

I don't know if this extend warranty is offer by Toyota for all RAV4 as a option or not?

I am sure Anchorman will be able to advise and recommend a course of action for you, as the ENGINES may have a retrospective warranty even in Romania.

In March 2010 I already had my extended waranty and engine changed in Malta even though the vehicle was a UK import.

Not sure wether Toyota use forged or cast crankshafts, but it looks like a duff casting (I M H O )

I think this is all related to this piston oil burning problem, Obviously the crankshaft has been missed when the pistons were changed, I belive this is what happens when your oil gets saturated with soot, The black bearing shells in the TSB mentioned in another post.

I meant to say in the UK with Piston problem now has 7 years and not 5 years. You will have to fight it out with Toyota and prove somehow that this problem was related to the pistons, and the crank shaft was missed....

He should have had a new engine really should.nt he?

Absolutely agree: looks like a duff casting. Properly cast metal doesn't have the rough 'crystalline' structure that is revealed here. I had a RAV4.2 front anti-roll bar which mysteriously snapped several years ago: the good metal snapped bright/clean, the hair-line crack fault looked just like your c/shaft - black and crystalline.

It is really sad story

Do you keep all bills as paid during those service with an engine penetration and recognizing of its design? It would help you to arise a legal claim and refunding ........

As to the crank pin crack ---- please check with availability of steel tube mounted on the cyl block oil main and serving as piston cooling pipe kicking the piston head internally by an oil jet. If they has forgotten to install it or even did not tight it correctly then the piston could be over heated and finally blocked inside the liner. In case that is true -- please send us photos of both piston and liner taken from inside the block. it is understood both liner and piston skirt surfaces will have a rough scratched.

Besides -- a dark spot on the crank pin close to an oil supply hole confirms this crack has been originating not once but during a period because a dirty black oil has already penetrated into the cast iron (absorbed) -- this again confirms piston overheating and blocking in the liner.

What could happed -- the piston skirt has permanently been braking its movement onto the liner. By the way -- have you experienced fuel consumption increasing during this period?

The black discolouration is caused by heat. You can see it in the webs on the last photo and just through the break near the oil hole. It is also normal for the crank to break through the oil hole (weak spot) but the unanswered question is what caused it. You can see that the crank has siezed on No1 big end and that could be the last to get oil. Was the engine using oil? Were you driving up or down a very steep hill?

BTW I believe the casting is normal.

There may be local restrictions for warranty but I would write to the Toyota head office in your country.
