2001 Rav4 Radio Tuning Problem

Graeme Ross
 Share

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Just bought a brilliant Y reg Rav 4, only 45,000 miles....very happy. That is, until I turned on the radio.

A brief sum up is:

Radio DOES switch on

CD does work completely

Trip computer does work

However, the radio will not be tuned in to any station. The tuner won't 'scroll' through the stations and the 1-6 presets don't go to any stations. The digitial display just shows 87.5 and all you hear is static.

Any suggestions anyone??!

Thank you in advance for your help

Hi Graeme and wecome abroad,

Have a wee look further down this Page 1 where anurra poster is having problems with his 58812 radio that I have replied to. Good luck with the wean's new transport,

So when you press the right arrow (near the bottom left hand corner) and hold it down for a couple of seconds it doesn't scan up the band? Have you the manual that explains how to tune the radio in?

Hello,

Thank you for replying.

I don't have the manual unfortunately. When I press and hold the button I get a loud 'beep' but nothing happens... the buttons do work as I can use them to scroll through the tracks when a CD is inserted. Just not with the radio.... grrr

If it's the button I'm referring to it does bleep then after a couple of seconds it start scanning the band. I don't think it is used during CD operation. Which toyota unit is it as it may be different from mine?

Right. I may be pressing the wrong button - i'm in the dark to be honest without the manual.

Its the 58806 radio/CD

Which button should I be using to tune the radio? Is it the 'double button' with two arrows pointing in opposite directions? Its on the bottom left hand side.

Thank you!

The manual doesn't mention model nos. (well mine doesn't) but yes it is the double button on mine , try holding that right button down. If the Battery is disconnected it will lose the stored presets (does on mine).

Just nipped out and tried it but to no avail. It beeped. I held it down for about 20 seconds and nothing happened.... the digital read out stays at 87.5.

Very strange as everything else is working.

Thank you for your suggestions

Cheap test. Pull the vehicle Battery for 10 minutes. Expect lumpy idle for the first 80-100 miles after as the engine learns the fuel trims again.

Are you able to switch between the wavebands? Pressing the "AM/FM" botton should switch between MW, LW, FM1, FM2, etc.

If you can, then are you abloe to use the scanning button "<>"?

when the switch beeps are you still pressing the button in or releasing it?

you must release it when it beeps.

If I have not made it clear before, apparently it is indeed a very common fault on these Toyota radios to require a new CPU like wifey's did, hence the reason they are on eBay at what is indeed a wee bit sore price....hope both posters find something simpler on their 58806 and 58812 units.

If you have no owner's manual, Graeme. PM me your address and will send you doon wife's for a couple of weeks.....very small fee to fellow member shcm's sponsored drowning, but I will cover postification to That England....

Hopefully her 2004 manual will be same or similar to your "Y" reg Rav....?

Yup as big kev said its a common fault. I had same problem and in the end just replaced it with a navigation unit. Only downside with that is you will lose the avg mpg and fuel screen

Yes, tried that, still nothing!

Sorry, been a bit busy to reply, but thank you all for your suggestions. I'm guessing it must be a 'deeper' problem. Unfortunately I wouldn't have a clue how to intall anything that came off eBay, nor would I want to risk trying!

Would a trip to the dealers be a good (if expensive!) idea?

Yes, I can switch between the various bands, but the <> scanning button doesn't work on any of the bands.

Thanks for your suggestion

There is a "unit self test" sequence applicable to the 58812 unit, Graeme, which I don't know if will also be relevant to the 58806....I will do a search of my own posts and those of shcm, as have forgotten the test's button pressing sequence.

Really is starting to confirm your main CPU has waved goodbye....

If you can wire a plug you can change your radio.

The factory one is a plug-in swap. It's secured by 4 number 10 bolts, one will need a long extension for your ratchet to reach them cos they are quite deep.

For a non Toyota item, a plug in wiring adaptor is about £7 on eBay. Let us know what you are intending to buy and we will confirm it's right/wrong.

The dealer will quote you £1600 for a new radio and £120 to fit it, with a £70 inspection fee on top. There's not any other options open to him.

EDIT: In fact I have a surplus 58812 you can have for the price of the postage. IT came with a CDC that I wanted so it's untested but I've no reason to think it doesn't work.

I can't remember the sequence off the top of my head, but it is something like hold buttons 1 and 6 while powering on.

There's kind of no need to hold the arrow button. A single press should move the frequency by 50kHz. A second press and it should be reading 87.6 MHz.

I wonder if something was previously attached to the CD changer port and removed before you got the car? Some of these radios need pins (It's a comms bus) at the back connecting together to work properly. Two halfs inside the unit communicate this way. It's a strange arrangement, but I'm sure there must be some more logical reason for it. Perhaps the connection has not been replaced. However, very often in that case they don't come on at all or the CD doesn't work.

I'd need to search for the pinouts for your particular unit to check if it is like this, then you'd have to look at the back of the unit.

Yeehah, Graeme....our two resident boffinators (Joylove and shcm) are on the case (stonking offer on the 58812, Bob....nice wan).

If you're anywhere near the West of Scotlandshire, I could fit Boab's unit wiff me eyes shut....had the wife's in and out in jig time.....please read that carefully....ladies present. Also suggest you change the standard retaining (hex) bolts with posidrive heads as I did....saves all that tedious dropping the effers down the heater trunking....!!!

I think I would have had a coronary if I had turned up at the dealership and been quoted that! Damn.

That is an exceptionally generous offer. I would love to take you up on that. Can you message me your address and I will send a cheque (if thats ok?) for whatever price you deem suitable.

Big Kev - I used to be north of the border myself, but now I'm very far from home - like Dorothy and Toto - but thank you for your kind offer. I may pay your mileage to come and fix it if it all goes wrong, so be on standby!

I'm now hopeful there is a solution to this

Will go and play with wife's 58812 and remind masell of that which shcm's watter on the brain has destroyed (the self test sequence) and reporticate, Graeme.

Unlike some football teams, most of whom play in differing hues of blue, there is indeed a solution available......

my radio is exactly the same. was quoted a silly price so just replaced it with an aftermarket unit

if you dont mind losing the temp and mpg read out do that

its a straight forward job to remove the unit if you were to find a working unit

i think someone posted a guide only the other day on the forum
