Smart Vs Iq Size Comparison

Does size really matter? I dunno. Take a look at these pics I took a while back parked next to a Smart car outside Asda. It's clear to me the iQ is wider and longer, and we know this, but seeing it in the metal, side by side. I'm glad I chose the iQ to buy and not the Smart though. You could say, that was a Smart move...

You're right, the iQ is so much better than the Smart  I was parked beside a Smart recently at Tesco and I couldn't believe how cheaply finished the Smart looked. The iQ is miles ahead of the smart :P Plus the Smart only has 4 euro ncap stars but the iQ has the full 5.

You did make the Smart choice, Every time I see a Smart I think I made the right move too. :)

Yes.. but still... owning an iQ (2010) and a Smart (2001)...

But ... Smart is a Mercedes (YES) .... reliable ... same as Toyota ... [1-1]

But ... My Smart only has 2 airbags ... iQ has 9 ... [1-2]

But ... Surviving a collision.. so the toughness of the metal [1-3]

But ... When I go to the city center .. I am glad with my Smart.. ALWAYS, a parking place...[2-3]

But ... The power of a 600 CC ... 3-cilinder engine WITH a turbo and chip-tuned... gives TONS of fun ... way quicker than the iQ...[3-3]

But ... When I go far ... the luxury of the iQ is overwhelming ... Cruise control... wide seats... etc...[3-4]

But ... The Smart club is a very lot of fun... and much older than iQ club... more to do with repairs and DIY .... The iQ club is hopefully also going that way.[4-4]

I have both .. and both fulfill a world of fun ....[5-5]

But ... I must say ... I have a 2001 Smart Fortwo City Coupé 600CC (it's a 450)... And I do not want to miss it. Cheap on insurance and gas...[6-5]

But ... The old Smarts are the most fun.. The newer ons (like the 451) has 1000 CC and NO turbo... these are not the very nice cars, they used to be ... [6-6]

So...

[6-6] for the Smart VS iQ .... And still the iQ wins... IMO... Comparing a brand new iQ with a 11 year old Smart...

So I understand your point of view ... but have to disagree (one "better" than the other)... They are NOT comparable ... sorry ....

Peter

PS A second car (the Smart) for city hoppers and shoppers... (and then get the model 450 / 1999 till 2003 about) is a very good idea... Available for less than 2500 euro's...

PS On the pics you can see that the Smart that is shown is a "cabriolet" version... NOW that is a very good choice to make... yummie... Tons and tons of fun!!!!!

I've had 3 Smart cars over the years, two for two's and one roadster. When we bought our first one I said, "if we ever need to do a long journey, we would just hire a car". The problem was it was so much fun to drive we went all over in it. The Smart club is a really good club and we ended up driving all the way to Zell-am-see in Austria for a European Smart car event as well as the Smart factory in France. One year we drove all the way back from Monaco to the North East of England in 17 hours in the Smart Roadster.

I've only had the iQ for a few months, just over the winter, but have decided to hang on to it and start playing around with a few mods, maybe then I'll start having as much fun with the iQ as I did with the Smart.

This however is one thing you can't do with the iQ.....

Yes .... I could not agree more!!! Even change the plastic for another color ... easy done...

BTW in the back door (the one that flips backwards and down) one can see 2 strange plastic thingies. Those are NOT collision bars or so. They are the outside of the plastic cover boxes in witch one can tug the left and right roof bars (from window to the back) away in. So they are out of sight when with the roof open!!

If you have 2 consenting iQ owners,

one with say a Silver iQ & one with a Black iQ,

(or maybe a Silver & Red)

then there is nothing to stop you going and swapping doors, bonnet, boot, even front and rear bumpers for the 'Smart' car Tridon contrasting colour Safety Cell look!!

True, true... soooo true...

Even in the Smart club (www.smartforum.nl, they have 3336 Dutch members, mind you) this happens... not often ... but ... it's done ...

One has to look at the color of the "tridion". This is the metal central chassis. Every ntype can have a different basic color, like gray or black. The plastic parts can have every color. Some even wrap the plastic for a "strange / unregular" color.

Peter

PS BTW

@ mike n helen can you please mention the www.Smart-Club-adress.com.uk , cause there are more than one Smart Clubs.

Ahhh! We did consider the Smart ForTwo for three months. I convinced myself and my wife it was for us, so I actually like the Smart, but not as much as the iQ. I am not against Smart's and Peter, I agree with you. Each car has their place, their job to do, and each does it well, just the iQ does it in more style and comfort. Let's face it, the Smart does not drive as well as the iQ, with that dodgy transmission for one. I do like the idea that you can change it's colour scheme relatively easy. No costly respray. It has a lot of plus points and I do like the little hidden away storage in the tailgate, and that you can open the top piece to put stuff in the back easily. Also the seating is good, great view all round and it's different. More variety too in that you can have non panoramic, panoramic, sunroof and convertible roof system. I think they just look tired very easily. I have seen a number of them lately looking worn out. A good thing in a way as it shows their owners use them to the max. I have no doubt the Smart is easier to park too, being that bit narrower and shorter. The Tax at £30 a year is what, as much as a tank full of fuel? In all, I would have to say, I still like the Smart (but I prefer the iQ ;) )

PS: I also think the iQ is more of a rare sight on the roads.

...

You have the finger on the pain spot there... Even if mine can go 145 km/hr... Yes it can... BUT... any wind or bumps... man oh man ... soooo hard to keep in a straight line.... pfff

I think they just look tired very easily.

Because they are cheap for a company... lots and lots of them have been used by pizza-delivery guys... and as advertising object... Those people do not care as an owner does... so they run until they drop dead...

Further... the newer Smarts really are not good... bad fuel economy... NO turbo.... same dodgy/terrible clutch thing...

Only GOOD thing is: they are used in Amsterdam as electric cars, by the hundreds... with a Smart-Phone one can find one... use it and leave it wherever one wants... when the powers runs low.. you find a charging point.

Terrific that the city of Amsterdam does this.. all because of air pollution and fine-dust prevention... (Hmmm... SO they can build more buildings for housing.... ?) :driving:

My sister had a smart and I think they look even better styled now than the earlier ones that she had, But one day she let me drive it and the BIGGEST thing that put me off was the transmission, it was not for me and I understand its still the same. I did consider it before I bought the iQ but had a drive around the block, well actually made my mind up in 5 yards still the same .Its a shame really

I was very and I do mean VERY tempted to go for a Smart over the iQ as I was being messed around like you wouldn’t believe trying to get a decent test drive. By decent I mean more than just a run up the road, in the end the iQ I bought was all the way up on the other side of Ipswich, 20 mins doing some town, bit of national speed limit and a couple of country lanes, so nothing I wouldn't expect when buying any car.

The build quality of the iQ I found to be better, but the engine in the Smart was/is more lively, has more urgency about it and as for the Brabus flappy paddles. :D

I test drove a Smart and the way the gear box changed gear was dreadful.

A 600cc Smart gave me a little burn up a few weeks ago. My iQ3 multidrive was faster.

You can easily get 3 and 4 at a push in the iQ, only 2 in the Smart.

The Smart is narrower, so probably a little better in the city, but the turning circle on the iQ is amazing.

Has it still got the clunky gear change? also how does the 600cc smart stack up on fuel economy with ref to the 1.0 iQ?

I So a 1.3 litre beat a 600cc car! No real surpise IMHO. On the earlier Smarts the sluggish gear changes can easily be resolved with a remap. The newer Smarts have a different engine, which I think are Honda under the Badge.

Re the economy I wouldn't think there's much in it.

Brabus Smart For Two Xclusive 1.0, 95mph, 124g/km, Ins Grp 5, Tax Band D (£95 a year), Urban - 43.5, Xtra Urban - 64.2, Combined - 54.3.

Smart For Two Cabrio Passion 1.0, 90mph, 100g/km, Ins Grp 4, Tax Band A, Urban - 60.1, Xtra Urban - 68.9, Combined 64.2.

iQ 1.0, 93mph, 99g/km, Ins Grp 2, Tax band A, Urban - 55.4, Xtra Urban, 70.6, Combined 64.2.

Details from AutoTrader cars, all nearly new models (2010-2011). You'd think that by now the Smart move would have ensured the transmission problems were addressed before bringing out the revised model. Merc/Smart don't listen.

But the Smart has a turbo.

I would always go for the iQ as it has 3 seats. There are 3 in our family, so the smart would not be any good. And I could not live the the way the gearbox works and would not want to spend money on that sort of thing.

YEP.... exact same thing ... only with flappy paddels just (I mean just) a little better... in automatic is also the same... toooooooooo .... slooooowwwwww .....

Fuel eco of 1000 CC is less eco=nomical... due to 5 gear VS 6 gears in the 600 and 700 CC ..

And speed compared with the iQ... the Smart wins in a accelleration-race when the Smart is in 3rd or 4th gear... doing 30 miles/hr... both cars then...

But in a drag race.. the time to shift takes the fun away... from 0 up to what ever speed...
