Spare Key Won't Start Car

I hope someone here can help, as I have a problem with the spare key (Wifes key).

I haven't used it since I got the car, and the Battery depleted and this only came to light at the weekend, so I got a new Battery and fitted it yesterday.

This morning the car unlocked and locked fine from the spare key, but the car refused to start, so this seems to be an immobilisor issue.

Does anyone know if this is something I can solve myself, or will I have to show Mr T some crisp bank notes?

I would try a few more times with the spare key.

When I changed the Battery in my main key it didnt work the first few tries, then bingo no more problems.

I did give it 15 mins of starting and stopping between both keys, but it wouldn't work on the spare.

Maybe try again tomorrow.

If it's the keyless entry version, try holding the key just over (literally touching) the start button and see if that works.

Oh if i remember correctly, the side of the key with the Toyota Badge must be facing the button.

The Battery in the key shouldn't have any effect on the key starting the car AFAIK. Unless things are done differently in the Auris, the imobilliser normally "talks" to the key via an inductive loop relying on proximity of the key to the steering column to establish the connection.

Many years ago there was a problem with Renaults ? in that there was a "counter" running in software in the imobiliser that clocked up how many times the car had been started on the key in use. If it passed some predetermined figure without the other key being used then that key was locked out.

As always in cases like this... is it worth disconnecting the Battery (car battery) for a few minutes and trying again.

Also, had the old Battery in the key leaked ? If so then that could have damaged the electronics in the key.

Thanks for your reply guys.

I don't have keyless entry, but thanks for the tip. Ironically that method is mentioned in the handbook, but my normal key doesn't get a mention.

The Battery didn't leak, and all the circuitry is fine. It just run flat, but a new Battery works fine and the buttons lock and unlock the car as they should.

I'm pretty sure its a transponder issue, but not sure why or how to get the car to recognise it again.

I will try disconnecting the car Battery this weekend and see if that helps, thanks for the suggestion.

Another thought... is the key physically on it's own ? (as in not with others in a bunch on a key ring that also have a transponder).

That can cause problems if they are all close together.

Is that an experienced answer, or just another negative remark about a car and brand you didn't like when you had one?

The key can be coded from a locksmith whos specialises in car keys as well we had a Yaris done for £50 about a year ago. It has a chip in the key which will start the car, but didnt have the function to arm and disarm the alarm or central locking. If you want a backup key its worth it as it will get you moving.

Dealers will charge a fair bit.

Thanks for the response. I will look into the locksmith and dealer option when I have spare cash to throw at it. For now we can share a key.

Is this worth a go? It rings a bell anyway, so I would try it before commiting to buying anything from anyone.

Good luck.

Edit: this one seems more appropiate:
