Switched From Air In The Tyres To Nitrogen

IIRC Costco always sell and fit tyres with nitrogen, my mother-in-law's Mini has had a few sets of tyres off them over the years and every now and then when I do check her tyre pressure, I have noticed less changes than normally expected, even during the transition between warm-colder weather.

I'd have nitrogen in my tyres IF the garages near me would do it AND the cost was marginal ie. a £1 or so.

Have now covered around 400+ miles with my nitrogen wheels, and I would still claim that it's a smoother ride, and not so noisy as it used to be.

The air pressure stayed just as stable as with Air, so neither an improvement nor a disadvantage there.

So all in all, so far.... its the same just more quiet.

Hi,

Can the nitrogen tyres be topped up with normal air? Or does it have to be nitrogen only?

Call me ignorant! :dontgetit:

TIA.

You can top it up with normal air; You'll just lessen the benefit (If any...!) from the nitrogen.

It's like using 'super fuels' like V-Power; Mixing it with normal fuel doesn't cause any problems, it just lowers any benefit that it would have normally given.

As a matter of interest all airliner tyres have to be nitrogen filled as a safety meassure.

Normal air contains about 80% nitrogen and comes free if you have your own foot pump. I have never really seem any significant advantage to using 99,8% nitrogen apart from the dryness fraction of it. Pardon my opinion but I consider that the use of nitrogen in road tyres to be a wallet emptying play on peoples ignorance by the auto trade.

Honestly, the reason I wanted to know is that the tyres tread on our Prius are almost at the min. and need changing. Costco is offering a 20% discount and I have not been able to find any other seller offering a better price than theirs, so interested in purchasing from them. From the posts on the forum it seems that Costco fills up the tyres with nitrogen so was wondering about the top-ups.

I also hope that nitrogen-filled tyres aren't fitted with a different / special valve either. Can anyone confirm.

TIA.

No, they're not. I've had tyres filled before with nitrogen from Costco, wouldn't have a problem having them filled again if I got the chance, one thing I did notice was that they needed less topups than when filled with regular 'air'.
