Rav 4 Smart Key.

Have lost the spare smart key so need another. The main dealers have quoted £299.14 for another. Does anyone know if there are any other, cheaper options other than a main dealer. This alarm alows you to just touch the handle to open the door when near with the fob.

The fob also has a touch open / close button and a spare blade key in the end.

Tim.

Ouch! is all I can say.

Have you checked that you don't have an insurance policy that covers lost keys? quite a few car and home insurance policies do.

Are you also sure this was not lost in a place where you car is often left? if so, wonder if you could be deemed liable if the lost key was used to gain access to and to drive the car away? might need new locks and a transponder recode!

(think I will go now after that depressing thought and check what cover I have for my own Smart Key :( )

Hmmm i thought ***** Turpin was dead ...daylight robbery!!

I paid an extra £15 for key cover with Adrian Flux, you get a small key ring to attach that offers a £10 reward if found. Well worth the little extra. I had no idea a fob would be so expensive

Hope you find it!

Hi David / Lee.

I am 100 % sure the key has been lost in the house. I have turned the place upside down to no avail. It will probably turn up one day but for now I'm down to the one key. I've checked and if this one gets lost then the bill for sorting the new alarm + keys will be between £1000.00 and £1500.00, double and treble checked different dealers.

David is correct. If the key was lost and someone picked it up followed me and then nicked the car, insurence would deam it my fault and not pay out. My excess is nearly the cost of the new key so pointless that side. I haven't thought about my house insurence but think that only covers the house keys, will check.

On E bay a company is selling a thing that plugs into the diagnostic socket. Following the instructions of what to do with the excisting fob next to the start button it collects the info off the old fob then puts it into the new fob. Sounds good at only £25.00. Problem, the fob which the dealers say can only be bought from them is £180.00 + £30.00 for cutting the blade !!

I feel sure there must be someone out there who replicates these fobs for a fraction of the cost.

Sods law dictates you will find the missing key 5 minutes after you come home with the new spare!

I know there are a lot of key fobs on eBay, but they dictate typically that you have the old key innards to swap over, as they are for broken rather then lost fobs :(

There is one route you could try .... Automotive Breakers. Some may have had a totalled RAV4 come in with the SmartKey fitted?

Your situation is food for thought to me though. We have two cars in the house (well, on the driveway!), both with SmartKeys. Key cover does sound like a good idea (isn't hindsight a great thing!)

Well it's a lot of dough but it's a fairly complicated bit of tech. Sure not as complicated as a £300 mobile phone but it's probably £150 complicated.

Techstream has been able to code keys to my car (2000/X 4.2), it cost me £55 to get set up (although the costs are coming down), with the bonus that I have proper Toyota software and it can delete the missing keys and do fault code work too.

I used a used fob with a fresh key blank. I found the fob had to be from a RAV4 and from the same generation, I bought 2 wrong fobs and had to wait for the correct part to pop up on eBay before I got it right.

Hi Bob,

Just been on web for techstream but there's alot of sites offering training and other stuff. Do you know which one is for the key fobs ?

Regards,

Tim.

Techstream is a piece of software, and there is an ECU page for coding and deleting keys.

Looks a bit like this, only this is doing a sensor calibration.
