Trouble Starting In The Morning. D4D 2.0 1 Adt Engine.

Hiya wondering if anyone has experienced that their avensis d4d on the first start up in the day just dies on them ,mine has to be turned over between 3-6 times before it finally starts. After reading the forum I'm thinking that it might be the scv valves, or maybe the glowplugs but the glowplug light comes up on the dash, and as far as I can see they are serial connected so a failure here would mean the light is absent. So if anyway knows they answer to this please share. Thank you. Just wanted to say that this is a great forum, keep it up guys. Also read that the best oil to put in the gearbox ( 6 speed manual ) is a strait 75 instead of the 75-90, I put in the latter and have had have trouble since, when i changed it, the oil Toyota had put in came out black, the guy in my spares shop said it was because toyota had added a friction reduction additive, so I did this as well but 10.000 miles later its a bit of a job to change when car is cold. Any ideas?

Sounds as though at least a couple of glow plugs are past their best or even a duff relay

As Dave states could be the glow plugs, your local garage could easily test them.

Does the car fire up, then run poorly and then cut out?

How many miles has the car done?

When i start it, it gives a few pops never really firing on all cylinders. When i finally do get it started I get white smoke out the back and a strong smell of sulfur. Also when it starts the revs dips slightly as if it wants to stop but only once. It's only one the first start up of the day after that its all ok. The car has done 100.000 miles and works as a cab.

Could be the early signs of worn injectors, my old Verso did this and replacing the injectors resolved the issue. It was worse on a cold morning, if started from warm there was never any issues.

Just looked over your reply, and u said it was the early signs, how many miles did u get before it got worse? Been looking and injectors are about 200+ each, any opinions on recondition ones? And of course are they easy to change?

each injector assembly consists of : solenoid; body and nozzle tip where the last one is considered as consumable.

it is tought by a nut. the tips are sold. Cheers

Well...ours were changed just before the 3yr warranty ended so it caused no issues. When the problem surfaced the temperatures were well into the minus's, so i dont know if it was better when milder.

Personally you might want to try some injector cleaner Forte/BG244 and see if it does any good.

If not find a Bosch/Denso/Delphi accedited Diesel specialist and they will test each one, reconditioned is ok if they are done by this type of supplier. You might only need a couple. The physical replacement isnt that hard as far as i know.

Thank for all your help guys, of course as always I went out today, being a nice day 14 celcius, and it started straight away. I had some redex injector cleaner so put that in the tank. I will try to order some of that bg 244. It's about £20 on eBay anywhere cheaper?

your problem only happens below 10 degrees is this correct ,i see this every day your vehicle requires a software update get urself down to ur local toyota dealer for the latest software update which should be 305b7000 for your vehicle there is also a modified scv to compliment this repair ,but the update alone usually sorts it ..

Do you know if issue was fixed in v. 6000? Mine has same problem, and was even serviced last month. Do you know approx release date of the 7000 version? Engine is 1AD-FTV.

Thanks

Thomas

i've had the problem for the last year and a half, thing is it always starts but not on first try,got new glow plugs and power is going to them, the old ones were fine!,anyway it did fail to start once but that was beacuse the Battery was shagged, put a new uprated one on and it's never fail me since,i too use mine as a taxi it's now done 147000 and as i'll probably only keep it for another nine months i'm not going to spend what could amount to quiet a lot for something that isn't really a problem

Im not aware of a 6000 cal id the prevoius cal would have been 30554...

Interesting. My cal Id is precisely 305B6000. Engine 2007 version, updated last summer.

Why is update not done per default at service?

Thanks, Thomas

Great :) The cal ID is available via Obd2, using ELM327 and Android Torque app. My engine has DPF.
