Interior And License Plate Led Lights

Recommended Posts

I'm planning to change a few more of my light bulbs to a brighter white. What bulb should I buy for the interior light? I don't know if it's just mine... but it's really dim... I need something a lot brighter. Also would like to change the lights on my rear license plate. It's a bit yellow-ish. I would like it to be a nice white color. Do you guys know which model light bulbs I have to buy for the interior and license plate lights? Thanks.

First of all there isn't a "light bulb" in the dome light . It is an integral 1/4 LED on a printed circuit board shining through a magnifying lens. If you look and search on here you will find my detailed modification which will increase the light output by about 20 times. It requines you to change some resistors for a lower resistance and higher wattage and also a 3 watt LED. A new printed circuit board has to be fabricated also. Take a look at my Mod.

The number plate light bulb can be changed for an LED one but as yet i haven't investigated which one to choose. I can tell you its a 5watt 501 "wedge" bulb but you will have to look an the size of the enclosure to see what LED bulb will fit. This will give you a white light you require

I searched "interior lights" and couldn't find the thread with your detailed instructions for this modification. However I came across another thread where a member named Raistlin says that the interior light does use a light bulb and that he simply switched it with an LED bulb. Is very easy to take the number plate light out and look at it. and check it out on eBay for a replacement in LED. I have been making?Modifying the dome interior light as a direct replacement . I can't find the link on here either. to my original posting for it. There have been a few people on here that have found their own solution. I just made the original one more efficient with an extension to the rear being controlled by the dome's rotary switch.

Oh I don't plan on making it that complicated. I don't think I have any idea on how to extend the lights all the way to the back.

Since you've taken apart the interior dome light before, is it as simple as switching the exisiting light bulb with an led? In the Link I posted above, the member Raistlin gave a link to some "501 W5W 5 Watt" Light bulbs. So do I just buy one of those and change it? Because you said there's no light bulb there but the other guy says there is.

Just get David to mod it for you! Simple as pie! I've modded my iQ quite a bit and I think the dome light upgrade is probably the best mod I made!

I wish I can haha.. but I don't live in Essex. Yea this mod is at the top of my list, I'm sure it will make a big difference once I figure out how to mod it.

It's more that just swapping the LED. Take a better look for the thread detailing the steps involved.

I got David (Tarquin) to replace mine and added 2 rear LED's, it was the best upgrade I made. Unless you are an electronics engineer, try and get David to post you one up.

So David will post me the modded dome light and I post him mine? But I don't know how to install or even remove the light. I'm still trying to find the thread you guys are talking about with the detailed instructions, but with no luck..

I think you really need to think again about trying to mod the car yourself. Best take it to a local shop and let them do it.

Sorry but things appear really hard work.

Not to sound rude, but i think there is little point me puting the detailed mod pictures up on the site again. To my knowledge there has only been one other who has been successful in modifying his dome light. It requires some electronic skills and knowledge. Its not possible to to go through the process solder joint by solder joint on here or by email. It would take a very long time

Hey Dave, some of the guys on here are telling me that you can post me a modded dome light? Please let me know if that's possible.

Yea I understand it will require some skills, if I feel I can't do it myself I will get a professional to do it.

When David took my light out, it did not take much effort. I'm sure he can explain how to do that. It's the electronic part that's best left to David to carry out.

Here is a few pics showing how the light comes out and some others showing the difference between original and modified light from the units. All you need is a standard dinner knife and it slides under the edge of the light where my finger is pointing and out it pops. Then just press the Tab on the connector and its dis-connected.

Thanks for the pics David. It is definitely a lot brighter. So is it possible for you to ship me a modded dome light? Or will you be posting more pics on how to mod it?

Just installed it (took a few seconds to work out which bit to squeeze to release the connector block !!)

Wow - what a difference in light output (and it's still daylight !!)

Thanks again.
