Rav4 3 Doors Vs 5 Doors Side Steps

G'day all... 1st posting and a plea for help!

My wife has a 3door 2002 (wont drive anything else now) and I've just bought her some 2nd hand steps from a breaker on eBay. These steps were advertised for a 3dr 2000-2005 and he had pictures on the ad of them on a 2001 3door. When they arrived however it became apparent they wouldn't fit. I downloaded the Toyota installation manual so I know how they attach (3 x 8mm bolts to the back of the sill).

They appear to be too long so I measured a car at work with the same type of steps (same car but a 2004 model) and I'm pretty sure the steps I have are for a 5 door.

My steps are 145cm long with the 'L' brackets being 136cm long. The work car I measured had a step length of 122cm and 'L' bracket of 110cm.

Can someone with a 5 door 2000-2005 model with Toyota OEM steps measure these two dimensions for me please. Methinks I might be putting them back on eBay...

many thanks..

Why don't you send them back to the seller and get your money back? - unless you got yourself a real bargain to compensate, you will give ebay/paypal 20% commission on the sell price

I have a perfectly good set of 3 door Rav SIDE TUBES in ma shed if you are interested in them at a goodly mate's rate, mate. Part of the proceeds would go to H4H and part to fellow member shcm's effort to drown himself on behalf of cancer charity. Any Englishman who threatens to do this has my backing......

Can furnish photographs (of side tubes, not shcm drowning.....)

Big Kev

Thanks for that Del - now I'm confused as mine sit between the two measurements! Sending them back to the seller might be difficult due to courier costs...I will contact them and see what they want to do.

Thanks for the offer Big Kev but I think postage costs to Sydney might be $$$$$$ pricey.

155 cm om 5-door

134 cm on 3-door

Hope this helps.

G'day Nigel,

Is there any scope for cutting them down?

The step is just an extrusion with the end caps pushed on and fixed with pop rivets.

Not sure about the support bar though - would depend if if the fixing holes are in the correct position along with the other holes.

The support bar is pretty substantial though and would stand modification if you can access any reasonable metalworking facility.

As for Big Kev's side bars, he'll deliver personally. I reckon if he sets off now he should be with you by June

Any excuse I will use to post a pic of my old RAV4.2 ..... (great motor, just drunk too much petrol :( )

This is what the Bars look like on the 5 Door - obviously the 3 Door will look the same :)

PS, don't tell Kev,but I think the Bars look nicer then the Steps :boxing:

As Dav says it would not be difficult to adapt the steps by cutting them down.

If I remember right you would have to slide the bracket that is at the front along a bit,I say the front one as you can saw that end of the heavy "L"piece as it is just a straight cut and at the rear it has a cut out section that needs retaining to enable you to get at the rearmost mounting bolt

Then you could just screw that bracket on loosely at the back and lift it into place and see how many hole(s) need redrilling.

When i bought my steps, used. the brackets that fasten on to the car were missing and I had to make them.

The only tools I used were a hacksaw.a file and an electric handheld drill and of course a vice to make them from a standard piece of angle iron, along with some tips from Kev.

You could always give it a go as it sounds as if you have nothing to lose if you cannot send them back!!

I have the necessary tools to mod the steps to fit (cut-off saw, welder) but I'm reluctant to play around with them unless I have to.

My daughter has a 1995 5 door and they seem a better fit on her car - two of the holes line up and the other is about 3cm out. BTW her RAV has done 290,000km and drives like 30,000....had it 5 years and only replaced the radiator, Battery and one CV boot in that time. Everything works perfectly...great car.

Measured the distance between the 3 holes in the bracket and they are 53cm and 64cm apart....could someone with a 5 door (2000-2005) measure the distance between the mounting brackets to confirm my suspicions

I bought the sideys for wife's car second hand in ok nick, but the brackets were quite rusty and after spending ages per bracket, I looked at the plastic end cap trims. Compliments of davem, I have two brand new ones in stock. Good luck if you cut these sideys down, Nigel.....drilling oot pop rivets from the original end caps, redrilling holes to suit, re-pop rivetting...nah mate.....buy ones what fit properly.

Sorted..the seller sold steps for both a 3 door and a 5 door in the same week and posted them to the wrong locations. I now have the correct ones fitted and wifey is pleased.
